Book Review: 'The Art Of OZ The Great And Powerful' Book

I enjoyed the film, and so I went and added this art book to my ever growing library.

This 256 page book reads more like a production diary for the film than the art book it says it is though. It details the behind the scenes process of the making of the film, from the initial ideas of how they were going to produce the film, and what inspired them, to the sets, video effects and costumes, with comments from the cast and crew as well. And very detailed it is too - it does kind of remind me of the 'Prometheus: The Art Of The Film' companion book, which also focused more on the production than the art - and features lots of photos from the live sets, giving you a sense of what was really there and what was added later via CGI - hint; there is a lot of photos of blue screen, but it was interesting to note that they had stand in puppets of Finley the monkey bellhop and the China Doll that they later replaced with CGI too rather than the actors acting against nothing, or the classic tennis ball on a pole.

It's in the softcover format, but that by no means diminishes the quality of this book. If you enjoy companion books to movies then you'll get a kick out of this book, more so if you enjoyed the film.
