Movie Review: Skyfall

Japanese Poster
Another film I had been looking forward to this year, and it didn't disappoint.

The previous Bond film 'Quantum Of Solace', which as good as it was, felt like there was something missing for me. With Skyfall, they've certainly found that missing something and James Bond is most definitely back on form.

From the usual action filled opening sequence and theme tune, sung by Adele, which is one of the best Bond theme songs in a while, right through to the end credits, Skyfall is up there as one of the best Bond films for me.

Daniel Craig simply is James Bond; very slick and gets the job done. Javier Bardem as Raoul Silva is one of the better Bond villains. Not cartoony as some previous villains but a classic villain that can flip from cool to humourous to menacing in a flash. He has a plan and knows what he needs to do to accomplish it, and almost does!

It's good to see Dame Judi Dench's M get a bit more screen time too, as Skyfall is more about M's past and Bardem's Silva looking for revenge. So rather than just seen behind her desk, M gets to feature in some of the action, particularly towards the end.

Director Sam Mendes has definitely brought his A game to the Bond films, and the cinematography is stunning too, the action pieces are shot perfectly with the right balance of action and tension. With the usual Bond globetrotting - from Istanbul to London to Shanghai and to Scotland, it all looks stunning.

I can also see why Mendes said that Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight partly inspired him in making Skyfall. It takes the main character and places him in unfamiliar situations, manages to fit the story around the real world, has an amazing villain and keeps you enthralled throughout. Even the soundtrack by Thomas Newman has a familiarity of Hans Zimmer's score for The Dark Knight in places as well.

I liked the nods to the previous Bond films too, topped off with the reappearance of the Aston Martin DB5 that first appeared in Goldfinger. The quip between Bond and Q about exploding pens is a classic.

After 50 years, James Bond is definitely going strong and Daniel Craig's incarnation is definitely a Bond for our times right now. Definitely recommended.

'Second Quest': A Kickstarter Funded Comic Book

'Second Quest' is a stand-alone graphic novella, inspired by The Legend Of Zelda video games, by David Hellman (the artist of 'Braid') and Tevis Thompson (writer of 'Saving Zelda').

Second Quest takes place in a world that has already been saved. Chaos was banished long ago, and the people were united. It is now the Age of Harmony.
A young woman discovers that she can draw out memories from objects just by touching them. But what these objects show her does not fit the legends she’s always been told. What will she discover about her island home? And what place does a curious, daring young woman have in a world that has already been saved?

Although I've not played any Zelda games for a while (not since Phantom Hourglass), I do love that type of videogame and I like the sound of the story for 'Second Quest', which is why I pledged myself as a backer for this project.

Hit the link to find out more about this project and help make it happen (you have until November 16 to pledge).

Book Review: 'The Swordsman Of Mars' by Otis Adelbert Kline

The story of Harry Thorne, outcast scion of a wealthy East Coast family, who agrees to swap bodies with a Martian noble, thrusting him into a fierce and vibrant world of strange beasts and stranger people, where a man's future is determined by the strength of his sword arm. Tasked with tracking down and neutralizing another Earthman before he establishes a corrupt empire, and trapped between the love of two beautiful and dangerous women, will Harry Thorne wind up a slave in the dolorous baridium mines, or will he step forward and claim his destiny as a swordsman of Mars?

I've not read any stories by Otis Kline before, but after reading Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter/Barsoom series of stories, and discovering about it and reading good recommendations from the 'Take Me Back To Barsoom' Facebook group, I took the plunge and gave 'The Swordsman Of Mars' a go - the first in a two book Mars series from Kline.

I have to say, 'Swordsman' is a very enjoyable read. Harry Thorne is very similar to Burroughs' John Carter, so if you enjoyed those books you're sure to enjoy this. Nearly every chapter is packed with action and is fast paced that you're swept into 'Hahr Ree Thorne's' Martian adventure.

All the good pulp action sci-fi is there; an outsider who's very adept with a sword, turns up in a foreign land that's populated with strange races, fantastical beasts, death rays, flying machines, chases, escapes, battles, a princess or two and a kingdom that needs saving from a tyrannical fiend.

If anything, Thorne does come across as a bit more cerebral than the gung-ho John Carter of Burroughs' stories, but if you like planetary romance and pulp science fiction then you can do no wrong in picking this up and giving it a read.

Bioware have teased a bit of concept art for Dragon Age III: Inquisition, and they look stunning.

They are also suggesting that you'll be able to take control of your own castle, and that the game will import prior character choices but, as executive producer Mark Darrah said at the Bioware panel at the Edmonton Comic & Entertainment Expo, "we're investigating some ways without save imports."

Here's the original promo pitch reel for Rian Johnson's awesome 'Looper', posted on his Vimeo. Rian asked Joseph Gordon-Levitt to record some voice-over, Zach Johnson did the sketches and with help from Ronen Verbit, constructed this 'fake trailer' using clips from other movies to show more some of the film's tone, and to show how the odd concept could be presented in a clear and compelling way.

I'm loving the darker, grittiness of this 'fake trailer' and the mashup of clips from Seven and Bladerunner. Would love somebody to make a movie of that!!!!
