Short Film: 'Lisa' by Drew Mylrea

From director Drew Mylrea, The Continuum presents 'Lisa':
"There is a new boom in the technology sector: Robotics. Humanoid robots have replaced most retail employees in major chains across the country. What sets these robots apart is how well their personalities are designed - how charming and helpful they are, how human they are perceived.

Few people in the world can design such a robot. It is an art - it requires a deep understanding of both humanity and technology. Our story focuses on one such individual: ANDERS OHM."

Short Animation: Disney's 'Paperman'

Directed by John Kahrs, Disney's 'Paperman' short animation, which is up for the Best Animated Short Film at this year's Oscars, is now online.
The short follows the story of a lonely young man in mid-century New York City, whose destiny takes an unexpected turn after a chance meeting with a beautiful woman on his morning commute. Convinced the girl of his dreams is gone forever, he gets a second chance when he spots her in a skyscraper window across the avenue from his office. With only his heart, imagination and a stack of papers to get her attention, his efforts are no match for what the fates have in store for him.
'Paperman' seamlessly merges computer-generated and hand-drawn animation techniques.

Book Review: 'The Legend Of Zelda - Hyrule Historia'

Originally released in Japan as a tie in for 'Skyward Sword' and the 25th anniversary of the first Zelda game, 'The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia', is a gorgeous 276-page art book and covers the complete history of Hyrule.

The book is already a best-seller even before its release due to pre-orders that sent it to the #1 spot on Amazon's sales chart, unseating '50 Shades of Grey'.

As this was originally a tie in with 'Skyward Sword', there is of course, quite a lot of coverage from that. And I do mean, quite a lot! Lots of concept art and character designs from the game, even on some of the supplemental characters!

The section of most interest to Zelda fans has to be 'The History Of Hyrule: A Chronology'; a complete history of the official The Legend Of Zelda timeline! Right from the beginning when the goddesses Din, Nayru and Farore created the world and left behind the Triforce, to the first game (but last game to be released) in the timeline 'Skyward Sword', all the way through until 'Ocarina Of Time'. After 'Ocarina' it does get a bit complicated though as the timeline then fractures into three! But it is well worth following as it is all very detailed.

The next section documents 25 years of artwork, with never-before-seen original sketches and illustrations from all the games and gives an interesting insight into the character designs from the series.

A special treat is the 32 page bonus 'Skyward Sword' manga by Akira Himekawa, actually based on the game, so probably only read it if you've played the game itself!

So, is this tome worth getting? A very big YES if you're a fan of the series as it's all very in depth and very well put together! A welcome addition to any Zelda geek's bookshelf!

It's Official!: JJ Abrams Will Direct Star Wars VII

Lucasfilm and the Walt Disney Studios have officially confirmed that J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars VII and written by Michael Arndt. Bad Robot will also be on board as a co-production company under the Disney / Lucasfilm banner. Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg will be consulting on the project as well. With a release date of 2015, the pieces are coming together.

Just a thought, but with his history with working with Abrams, I wonder if Michael Giacchino will be brought in on for the soundtrack or will John Williams be brought back?!

From the Lucasfilm press release:
“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,” said Kennedy. “J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”
George Lucas went on to say “I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller.  He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”
“To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honour,” J.J. Abrams said. “I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid.”
And from the Disney press release:
Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have a proven track record of blockbuster movies that feature complex action, heartfelt drama, iconic heroes and fantastic production values with such credits as Star Trek, Super 8, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm’s preeminent postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the feature films he has directed, beginning with Mission: Impossible III. He also created or co-created such acclaimed television series as Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe.

Short Film: 'Overview' by Planetary Collective

On the 40th anniversary of the famous ‘Blue Marble’ photograph taken of Earth from space, Planetary Collective presents a short film documenting astronauts’ life-changing stories of seeing the Earth from the outside – a perspective-altering experience often described as the Overview Effect.

The Overview Effect, first described by author Frank White in 1987, is an experience that transforms astronauts’ perspective of the planet and mankind’s place upon it. Common features of the experience are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.

‘Overview’ is a short film that explores this phenomenon through interviews with five astronauts who have experienced the Overview Effect. The film also features insights from commentators and thinkers on the wider implications and importance of this understanding for society, and our relationship to the environment.

New Webcomic: 'Perils On Planet X'

I love my pulp science fiction and this could be a webcomic to watch out for if you're a fan too!

'Perils On Planet X', written by Christopher Mills and illustrated by Gene Gonzales, is a swashbuckling adventure on a lost planet – classic space opera in the Edgar Rice Burroughs (John Carter) and Alex Raymond (Flash Gordon) mould, revived for a new millennium!

They plan to serialize the entire graphic novel (around a hundred pages or so) online, with a new page being posted every Friday, and then collect it in a print volume upon its completion.

Join Colonel Donovan Hawke of Terra as he travels through time and space to the ancient emerald world of Xylos – home of vicious reptilian predators, ruthless strato-pirates, beautiful princesses, and innumerable fantastic dangers!

The adventure begins on February 1st, 2013!

Kickstarter: 'Cities In The Sky - Science Fiction's Forgotten Visionaries'

If you read this blog or follow me on Twitter you'll find that I love my science fiction, and I discovered this Kickstarter project whilst on my daily news sweep.

Cities in the Sky: Science-Fiction’s Forgotten Visionaries is a Kickstarter funded documentary about the forgotten men and women who have contributed to science fiction, and uncover the origins of ideas we take for granted today. Such as; Aliens, The Internet, Cryogenics, Life extension technologies, Green technology, Robots, Equal Rights, Women in Key Political Positions, Space Travel and much, much more! The documentary will also include interviews with science fiction experts from entertainment, literature, and technology including people who worked on some of today's best known movies and television shows.

As they say:
"Writers like Verne and Wells get a lot of attention and they were no doubt great minds and visionaries, but a shocking number of other creative men and women stand largely unknown or forgotten; we deeply hope that we can help play a role in changing this situation!"

The Kickstarter project closes on February 6; take a look at the Kickstarter page and consider making a pledge. For sci-fi fans, this film could open up a whole new world!

Check out the video for more.

Short Animation: 'Exodus' by Potemkin

Potemkin notes:
"This low poly semi-epic child hood tribute space saga called EXODUS was born when Peder Norrby asked us to make a short film using Trapcode MIR. This is the first part of a space epic, establishing the protagonists and a fragment of the universe as well as the timeline in which EXODUS takes place."

Disney Has Asked Drew Struzan To Do The Posters For The New Star Wars Film

Even though he retired from the illustrating game in 2008, and despite doing the odd print here or there, Disney has asked Drew Struzan about producing the posters for the new Star Wars movies!

In an interview with Fanhattan, he says that Disney have made a couple of calls and that he hasn't ruled out the possibility:

"If the opportunity arises, it will be a real temptation. But it’s going to have to be a real temptation to get me away from my wife and my little grandkids and my family. Away from the green trees and the blue skies for a change instead of just locked in the studio. But, you know, never say never. All things are possible."

I'm hoping he is persuaded to come out of retirement and we get to see his poster art for Star Wars again. I love his art and can't recommend his art book 'Drew Struzan: Oeuvre' enough. Be good to see some posters where they are works of art instead of the generic photoshopped posters we see today too!

LIVE ACTION Toy Story!

Jonason Pauley and Jesse Perrotta started the project, a shot-for-shot recreation of the original Toy Story using live actors and toys, back in June of 2010, when they were just 17 and 18 respectively. They began by making clips without any intention of making the remaking the whole film. Eventually, their clips became popular enough—and their technique improved enough—that they committed to doing the whole entire movie in September of 2011. And now, a full two and a half years after they started, the finished product is here. They even actually made their way out to Pixar HQ last week and apparently got the OK to go ahead with the project.

Check out their full live action version of Toy Story below.

Go here for a three page preview of the first issue.

And here are previews of the cover art from the first three issues by Alex Ross. The force is strong with these and you'll want to embiggen these beauties!
