This Friday, Gallery1988 presents 'Fly', a solo show from Eric Tan (his Lion King print was the very first poster I featured on this blog!), who will take you on the ceremonial first flight of his own Tanner Airlines.

Based on the artist's travels, he has created a number of limited edition screenprints advertising each destination he's spent time in. This fully comprehensive show is remarkable as Eric has even went the extra step and helped transform the gallery into his own travel agency.

In addition to the posters, Eric has created an environment of details for Tanner Airlines, which includes this custom made pilot's pin that will come free with purchases, while supplies last.

'Fly' opens on Friday June 28th, from 7-10pm at G1988 (East) in Los Angeles. Eric will also be in attendance. The show will run through July 20th.

New Propaganda Posters For 'Ender's Game'

A trio of propaganda posters for the upcoming adaptation of 'Ender’s Game' have been released. I've not read the book, but I have listened to the unabridged audiobook and I'm fairly looking forward to this.
In the near future, a hostile alien race called the Formics have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley), all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford) and the International Military are training only the best young minds to find the future Mazer.
Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a shy but strategically brilliant boy, is recruited to join the elite. Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult challenges and simulations, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military’s next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School. Once there, he’s trained by Mazer Rackham himself to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race.
'Ender's Game' is out in cinemas October 25 (UK) and November 1 (US).

Cool Art: 'Pacific Rim' by Grzegorz Domaradzki (aka Gabz)

Odd City Entertainment has announced an official partnership with Warner Bros Pictures and Legendary Pictures to produce limited edition screen prints for Guillermo del Toro's upcoming 'Pacific Rim'. The first print in the series is by Grzegorz Domaradzki (aka Gabz).

The prints are 24" x 36” in different flavours; a regular edition with 6 colours with 2 metallic inks in a run of 225 copies, and a variant edition in 6 colours with 3 metallic inks in a run of 80 copies. There's also a metal print of the regular print in a limited edition of 55 copies.

The prints will be available at Odd City's store, and will be released randomly beginning on Tuesday, July 2nd and lasting through Thursday, July 11th until the film's release. Follow @OddCityNews on twitter for further updates about future releases in the 'Pacific Rim' series.

Check out the official press release and the awesome posters by Gabz below.
Odd City Entertainment is excited to announce, in partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, a series of limited edition screen prints from varying talented artists (Gabz, Todd Slater, NE, Gordon Jones and Graham Erwin) all inspired by Oscar® nominated director Guillermo del Toro’s EPIC new movie, Pacific Rim. When looking for artists to approach this soon to be classic sci-fi flick, Odd City Founder, Roman Morales, quickly zeroed in on the perfect lot that could bring the director’s vision to screen printed glory. Gabz, a world-renowned Polish artist, will be the first in this series to release his print upon unsuspecting Fanboys and Fangirls across the globe. Gabz expressed his enthusiasm about working on this project, “This is actually the first time I had an opportunity to work on something this big, so I was both excited and slightly overwhelmed at the beginning. Until now, I had worked on movies with plenty of references to be found on the Internet. In this case, I was mainly limited to the first teaser trailer that came out (pretty mind blowing by the way). I focused on Gipsy Danger, but instead of putting him in some type of massive sea battle, which was quite tempting, I proposed something inspired by World War 2 propaganda posters; something where the giant robot symbolizes the last stand of humanity. To better show the scale of the threat, I added a glimpse of the giant Kaiju hidden in the skyline. I’m pleased with the outcome and particularly with my version of the poster title, clearly inspired by Japanese apocalyptic cinema posters.” Roman, who worked closely with Gabz and the studios in this creative process, also commented on his beautiful work of art, “From the moment we discussed this project, Gabz was a part of it. He had already done a piece for us that we had yet to release and working with him was so easy. He had the ability to see the big picture, no pun intended. From just a single teaser, he was able to capture the spirit of a film that was already stirring all of our film geek sensibilities. I couldn’t see this series without him.”

My Favourite Webcomics: 'Perils On Planet X', 'Delilah Dirk' & 'Lady Sabre'

I love reading comics. Can't go wrong with 30 odd pages of action, adventure and suspense every month (or in a collected trade paperback after six or so issues if you prefer to read in one go). But not the ones of the superheroes in spandex kind that you see from Marvel and DC (although I did grow up on those types, until my mind was blown away by the likes of 'The Sandman, 'Hellblazer, 'Swamp Thing' etc!), but more along the kind that's mainly published by Image Comics, Dark Horse, Dynamite and Oni Press amongst others these days. My favourite monthly ongoing titles at the moment are 'Saga', 'Fables', 'Warlord Of Mars' and 'The Sixth Gun', and I can't recommend them enough!

But there's also webcomics. These are usually published online once a week for free, usually with a page or a few panels at a time. And below, are three (in no particular order) of my favourite webcomics.

'Perils On Planet X', which started in February this year and sees a new page every Friday, is a swashbuckling interplanetary adventure in the vein of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars or Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon. It's written by Christopher Mills, drawn by Gene Gonzales and colored by Ian Sokoliwski.

I love the stories of the pulp sci-fi era, especially the Barsoom books of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Otis A Kline's Mars and Venus series. This series so far, definitely has an air of the John Carter, Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers about it, a stranger in a strange land, a princess, swords and some good old gosh darn adventure. Well worth keeping up with.

In a different direction to 'Perils On Planet X' is Tony Cliff's webcomic, 'Delilah Dirk'. The first story, 'The Turkish Lieutenant', (Eisner and Shuster Award-Nominated too no-less) is set in 19th-century Turkey, an officer in the Janissary army must struggle to repay a brash adventuress for saving his life, even though she was the one who endangered it in the first place. It's a fun read and introduces the two main characters, Delilah Dirk - International Mistress of Swordsmanship - and Erdemoglu Selim, the Turkish Lieutenant, as they flee from the attentions of Zakul and his army.

There's only a prologue and four chapters of 'The Turkish Lieutenant' online (and soon to be graphic novel), but there is a second story that continues the adventures of Delilah and Selim - 'Delilah Dirk And The Seeds Of Good Fortune'. This is only available to buy as a 32 page physical comic book. Definitely worth getting as it's another fun read. You can check out the six page online preview here.

The third of my favourite webcomics is 'Lady Sabre & The Pirates of the Ineffable Aether'. Written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Rick Burchett, and with new pages published on Mondays and Thursdays, Lady Sabre is a steampunk-adventure comic about Lady Seneca Sabre - 14th Marchioness of Cascadia, and captain of the good ship Pegasus - and her crew as they sail the Aether and travel the Sphere. Full of swords, pirates, cowboys, airships with lots of adventure, romance and excitement and lots more. What's not to love!

There was also a recent very successful Kickstarter campaign to get the first five chapters collected into a printed 192 page hardcover volume too.

So there you go, three webcomics, each very different, but still offering a very fun read. Hope you give these a go.

Movie Review: 'Man Of Steel'

art by Paul Shipper
I've said before that I'm not too much of a fan of superhero films (Marvel in particular for some reason), but I did enjoy Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight' trilogy and Zack Snyder's adaptation of 'Watchmen', so I was fairly looking forward to watching their collaboration on 'Man Of Steel', especially after watching that third trailer.

It's the familiar origin of one of comic's most iconic characters, in which 'a young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.'

I liked the way they told Kal-El/Clark's upbringing and certain other events with flashbacks. Yes, this film is essentially a rebooted origin story, and it is a quite familiar story even to non-fans, so there's no need to go into too much detail, but just enough to get a grounding on his early life in Smallville and until we meet him proper.

The overall feel of the film I thought it was very sci-fi, much more so than any previous Superman film, what with the beginnings on Krypton and all the spacecraft etc. But I did enjoy that, and did separate itself from the previous films as a result.

This is a Zack Snyder film after all, and that is very apparent from the effects and camera angles. For me it did work well, particularly the way Superman, Zod, Faora etc were jumping and speeding around on screen. Also the carnage! By 'eck is there a lot of carnage during the climactic battle. So much so, I don't think there is much of a Metropolis left to make the already green lit sequel. Whole buildings collapsing, rubble everywhere, it all reminded me of the 9-11 ground zero videos.

I liked the ending with Clark and Lois at the end, had a smile on my face after that. Thought it was a good way to end it.

There is also a 42 page prequel comic, (story by David S Goyer, Geoff Johns and Zack Snyder, script by Sterling Gates with art by Jerry Ordway) that is worth a read that is set a thousand years before the film and ties into events in 'Man Of Steel'.

So, a modern update to a classic origin with all the thrills and action you can want, albeit with not much of a story, but just enough. The cast is really good in this and Henry Cavill IS Kal-El (Clark Kent only really appears at the end). If you're expecting a film in the same vein of 'The Dark Knight' trilogy, as most 'critics' probably were considering their low ratings, then you may be disappointed. But if you enjoyed 'Marvel's Avengers' and the other supers films from Marvel, then you'll certainly get a kick out of this!

Disney's 'Frozen' Teaser Trailer Sneak Peek

This teaser sneak peek for Disney's 'Frozen', their take on the Snow Queen, feels and looks like something more akin to the Pixar shorts you see before films. After seeing this, I'm not sure about watching the film. Still, you never know, it might yet be up to 'Tangled' / 'Wreck-It-Ralph' standards. Will have to see what the next trailer brings.
When a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, Anna, a fearless optimist, teams up with extreme mountain man Kristoff and his sidekick reindeer Sven on an epic journey to find Anna’s sister Elsa, the Snow Queen, and put an end to her icy spell. Encountering mystical trolls, a funny snowman named Olaf, Everest-like extremes and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.
'Frozen' is out in cinemas November 27 (US) and December 6 (UK).

Cool Art: 'Man Of Steel' Posters By Martin Ansin & Ken Taylor For Mondo

Wow! These are super cool posters from two of Mondo's legendary artists, Martin Ansin and Ken Taylor!

The Ken Taylor's poster measures 20″ x 36″ and costs $50 for the regular version and $75 for the variant. Martin Ansin's regular version, measures 24" x 36" and will also be $50, but if you want to go for the metal version, that's a bit more expensive. It's limited to only 100 copies and you'll have to pay $300.

And best thing is, Mondo will be doing something similar to what they did with the poster release of 'The Dark Knight Rises' by Olly Moss last year (One of the few Mondo prints I actually have). Instead of the normal limited edition sales, Mondo made the Batman design available for a full 24 hours. And today they've revealed that they will be doing something very similar for Man of Steel.

Mondo announced today via their official blog that Ken Taylor's prints will be on sale in the usual Mondo limited timed release, on sale this Thursday, June 13th, but Martin Ansin's regular print will be available for three straight days - 12:01AM CST on Friday, June 14th until 12:01AM on Monday, June 17th.

So follow Mondo on Twitter for when the Ken Taylor prints go on sale and head on over to the Mondo website to bag the Martin Ansin print.
