Cool Art: The Awesome Pencil Art Of Jay Anacleto

I first noticed the art of Jay Anacleto from his awesome 'Dejah Thoris' and 'Legend Of Red Sonja' cover art. The final covers themselves are pretty cool, but it's the original pencil art BEFORE they are coloured that got my attention. A quick scan on Google Images brought up a raft of very impressive art!

Jay Anacleto began his comics career with Brian Haberlin at Avalon Studios on 'Aria', and he's since worked on covers at Image, Marvel, DC and now Dynamite Comics. The art is very lifelike, with particular attention towards the shading and minute details. Pretty dang good considering he graduated with a dentistry degree and not art!

He doesn't currently have a website, or at least none that I can find, but he is on Facebook if you want to follow him and his awesome art.

Geeky Nerfherder 2nd Anniversary & My 2013 Favourites

It's now two years since I started this blog! And big thanks to everyone that visits here and I hope that you enjoy my posts of pop culture geekery.

I'm also on almost all the major social media sites too, although mostly Twitter and Instagram. So if you’re not already following me, but want to keep up with blog posts and other ramblings, here are the links to my profiles on each of these sites:

on Twitter (@GeekyNerfherder)

And so it's that time of year, where everybody lists all their favourites of the past year, and I'm no different. I have a big love of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, so I'm always going to be biased towards those genres and I'd say it's been another good year for SF&F output too. I've enjoyed the movies I've seen at the cinema this year, including some classic movies re-released on the big screen like 'The Princess Bride' and the 'Indiana Jones' Trilogy, plus once again, there has been a lot of awesome art inspired by pop culture, and I've even managed to bag a few awesome prints this year too!

This year I've 'discovered' the pulps and developed a new found love for the Golden Age of Science Fiction & Fantasy from the 1930's to the 1950's, as well as the movies, books, comics etc that have been inspired by the stories of the likes of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Otis A Kline, Leigh Brackett, Robert E Howard, Kenneth Robeson and more, but most of all, I've been enjoying the awesome illustrated art from that era, which I've been serialising on the blog every Monday (and lots more to come too).

But back to the present day, and here is a list of some of my favourite things from 2013.

'The Ring' inspired 'Samara And The Burning Tree' by Abigail Larson.
"'The Ring' is definitely one of my top favorite horror films. I find it visually gorgeous, a great story, and the score blows my mind. It's really a masterpiece. This painting was a real pleasure to make!" - Abigail Larson

Cool Art: 'Akira' Vector Art by Orlando Arocena

This vector art by Orlando Arocena featuring characters from 'Akira' is pretty cool.
"I've always been a fan of Katsuhiro Otomo's creativity. From his elaborate characters and profund interpretation of society, relationships and philosophy within story telling.
The 1988 movie adaptation of Otomo's story depicted a cyber-punk Japan in the year 2019 ( only 4 years from now...) and had an incredible influence upon me- a city boy from the Bronx-ready to embark on pursuing a curriculum of art at Pratt Institute. It's with the utmost respect, that I pay tribute to him and his story of AKIRA with this vector tribute." - Orlando Arocena

Daniel Danger's Mondo Screenprint 'Psycho' Restructured As A Digital Christmas Card

This digital Christmas card was made by Danny Ratcliff, a big fan of artist Daniel Danger, and is based on Daniel's screenprint poster of Alfred Hitchcock's 'Psycho'
"Daniel is one of my favorite artists - when tasked to make a Christmas card for the online art forum "Expresso Beans", I thought that the vibrant reds of this print would make for a classic (if subversive twist) on a digital card. Released in 2012 by the incredible Austin based gallery Mondo, this print represents the perfect pairing of artist and title - subtly yet assertively injecting his style into the piece and breathing new menace into a truly iconic license and creating something that is by turn both beautiful and unsettling."
Head on over to his Vimeo channel, where Danny explains more on the process of turning a screenprint into the finished digital Christmas card, and what Daniel Danger thought of it too!

Original Animatic Of The 'Return Of The Jedi' Death Star Battle

Ken Ralston, who worked on the visual effects for Return of the Jedi, discusses the "moving storyboard" created for the film's climactic Death Star attack sequence. The effects team shot, on tape, a simple version of the space battle with models on sticks, cardboard cutouts, and blue screen. It was crude -- sound effects were made by the crew themselves -- but effective. "I was hoping it would be in the movie," Ralston jokes. "But I guess not."

George Lucas was impressed, and spliced these temporary sequences into the live-action footage he had. From there, Ralston and ILM were able to use their "moving storyboards" as a guide for creating the actual scenes.

Cool Art: 'Forbidden Planet' by Laurent Durieux

'Forbidden Planet' by Laurent Durieux.

Wow! I love these posters by Laurent Durieux. Have to get this on my wall! These will be part of Laurent's solo art show at the Mondo Gallery on 4115 Guadalupe Street, Austin, Texas, from February 7, 2014 and running through March 1.
“Man, I love this movie! So retro-futuristic, so naive, so kitsch! That’s really my dope! Robby the Robot is iconic which is why I had to put it as THE star of the movie poster. The original poster is just sublime, the colours are just so vibrant, and so I tried to emulate that impression on my own take of this science fiction classic. This poster is the piece that took me the longest to finish, almost 2 months! I think it was worth the effort and the number of layers!” - Laurent Durieux.

This was a limited edition print made for this year's San Diego Comic Con.
"I was originally going to incorporate traditionally inked line-work into this but, due to time constraints, I was forced to fall back to my typical digital methods.
I found myself staring at a lot of Adam Hughes' gorgeous art while looking for costume reference because, well, he's just an incredible talent and no one else on the planet depicts these three characters better. So yes, his work influenced me a lot here. Consciously and subconsciously. Thanks for the inspiration Adam."

'Final Cut 2013: A Cinema Tribute’

JoBlo.com has once again knocked it out the park with another awesome tribute to another year of cinema with 'Final Cut 2013: A Cinema Tribute'.
"Well folks we're only a couple weeks from wrapping up 2013 and I honestly don't know where the time went. It was another excellent year of cinema and we're not even done yet by a long shot. From "Gravity" to "Nebraska", every genre has been re-defined with amazing new films that I have no doubt will be loved for many years to come. So in tradition as I've done for the past two years, I've put together this huge mashup of 283 films from the year for everyone to enjoy. There was plenty of sleepless nights with this one but it was all worth it in the end and I hope you all think so as well."
