Sci-Fi, Fantasy & Horror Cover Art: Virgil Finlay

I love the illustrated cover art of the vintage magazines and paperbacks of the 1930s, 40s and 50s - the period often called the 'Golden Age' of pulp Sci-Fi.

In the pages of magazines like Amazing Stories, Argosy, Famous Fantastic Mysteries, Planet Stories, Weird Tales and more, were stories of science fiction, fantasy and horror where writers like Edgar Rice Burroughs, Otis A Kline, Ray Bradbury, Leigh Brackett, Isaac Asimov, EE 'Doc' Smith, Philip F Nowlan, Robert E Howard and HP Lovecraft began their literary careers. These magazines were also the beginnings for the early science fiction and fantasy heroes like John Carter, Buck Rogers, Conan The Barbarian, as well as Doc Savage, The Shadow, The Phantom and more!

Artists took on the challenge of realising the fantastic stories within these magazines, with dramatic scenes of space travel, technological marvels, manly men, damsels in distress, robots and bug eyed monsters on the covers.

Journey back to the early days of science fiction, fantasy and horror, as I'll be showcasing some of the classic illustrated cover art from these magazines and books featuring the likes of Norman Saunders, J Allen St John, Lawrence Sterne Stevens, Robert Gibson Jones, Margaret Brundage and more.

If you love vintage pulp cover art too, you'll do well to visit Pulp Covers and Galactic Central.

This week, I begin with a look at some of the pulp magazine cover art of Virgil Finlay.

Fan Made 'Doctor Who' Opening Sequence by Billy Dakiduk

New fan-made title sequence for 'Doctor Who' by Billy Dakiduk for the new Peter Capaldi era, using Cinema 4D and Adobe After Effects.
"I wrote myself a brief... it's mantra was "Journey through space and time".
First section is the Doctors watch, and we fly inside. The journey through the cog-wheels end with our exit through the untempered schism. And into an escher-esque timey wimey never-ending clock face (a metaphor of time travel and the time vortex).

Our journey catapults us through the vortex into a void where the seal of Rassilon is drawn in aged metal, accompanied by the Doctor Who logo, with some subtle embellishments. The seal of Rassilon burns away, reminding us of the Doctor's disdain for the Time Lords; revealing the new Doctor's reflection in the back of the watch which then tumbles away to the black hole in the distance."

Book Review: 'Star Wars Art: Concept' Artbook

This is the fourth in the series of 'Star Wars Art' books ('Visions', 'Comics' and 'Illustration' being the others) and as with the others, this tome is also worth getting.

With 175 glossy pages packed with beautiful concept art from the likes of Ralph McQuarrie, Joe Johnston, Doug Chiang, Ryan Church, Iain McCaig and more, this covers everything from original movies, the prequels, television and video games, including the now cancelled TV show 'Detours' and video game 'Star Wars 1313'.

Starting with introductions from Joe Johnston, Ryan Church and Doug Chiang, what you get is page after page of full colour plates of paintings, plus sketches, and digital art, showcasing the creature designs, to the vehicles and beautiful vistas from the iconic saga. To be honest, it's probably nothing you haven't seen before, but it's good to see it all collected into one nice hardback volume.

If you enjoy flicking through the pages of movie art books and love the Star Wars saga, then I would recommend this book.

'Forest Healer' by Mia Araujo.
"I wanted to create a piece that would depict the forest as a place to heal from all the exhaustion, stress, and invisible wounds that each of us carry in our daily lives. I was inspired by Alphonse Mucha’s use of fabric and the intent gazes of his women, and by the healing power of the deer-god in Princess Mononoke. I had been listening to an audiobook version of Timothy Egan’s book about the worst wildfire in US history, ‘The Big Burn.’ So I imagined that all of the animals, forest spirits, and mythical characters that lived there would need a place of sanctuary after the horrors of a wildfire.." - Mia Araujo

Happy Birthday 'Firefly'

Created by Joss Whedon, 'Firefly' was first broadcast on the Fox network in the US on this day, September 20 in 2002 with the episode 'The Train Job'.

The episodes were not aired in their intended order and Fox cancelled the series after only 11 episodes, out of the 14 produced. Despite being short-lived, the series did very well when released on DVD, Bluray, and in syndication, and gained a huge fan base, 'The Browncoats' - and myself included.

The stories of the Firefly 'verse have since been expanded into a feature length movie, 'Serenity' and into a series of comics and even an online role playing game.

Happy Birthday Battlestar Galactica!

Created by Glen A Larson, 'Battlestar Galactica' was first broadcast on the ABC network in the US on this day, September 17 in 1978 with the pilot episode 'Saga Of A Star World'.

Legendary artist Ralph McQuarrie (who is best known for his work on the 'Star Wars' saga) did the concept art for the the pilot 'Saga Of A Star World' to convince the studios to pick up this costly project. You can see the concept art below, as well as posters and other art inspired by the show.

Despite ABC initially cancelling it after one season and 24 episodes later, there was a short-lived spin off series, 'Galactica 1980', and more recently, a hugely popular re-imagined version, created by Ronald D Moore and David Eick, that ran for four seasons, followed by the prequel series 'Caprica' and a spinoff prequel movie 'Blood & Chrome'.

Short Film: 'Rahab' by Rob McLellan

From the director of 'ABE' (which has now been picked up to become a full length motion picture at MGM), here's an earlier sci-fi short film from Rob McLellan and stars David Oyelowo, Jessica Oyelowo, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Victoria Bailey and Nick Ashdon.

This short won the 2011 Enter The Pitch contest, with the brief that you create a 2 minute pitch for your short film idea, based on a story in the bible, whether directly or loosely, and the winner gets £25,000 to produce it. 'Rahab' is based on the Biblical story of the fall of Jericho, and centers on a slave, a spy, a city under siege and a choice to be made that will change their world forever.
