Cool Art: 'The Sandman: Overture' Cover Art by JH Williams III

Back in the days when I really got into comics, I was lucky enough to experience Neil Gaiman's 'The Sandman' comic series from DC Comics (later to be published under their mature titles imprint 'Vertigo', along with my other favourites at the time; 'John Constantine: Hellblazer' and 'Swamp Thing').

And now, as part of a batch of new titles for Vertigo, The Sandman returns on October 30 with a brand new 6 issue prequel tale of how Morpheus was able to be captured in the 1989 first issue of 'The Sandman'.

'The Sandman: Overture' series will be bi-monthly, with interior art and covers from JH Williams III plus new covers from the original series' cover artist Dave McKean. And starting from November, alternating special editions which will include the original scripts by Neil Gaiman, concept art from Williams, a look behind the scenes, extra artwork, sketches, commentary and even special new translucent speech bubbles (developed by Todd Klein) to showcase the art even further.

More details about the series will be revealed at this year’s Comic-Con International: San Diego 2013. Gaiman, Williams and McKean are special guests of the convention, during which Vertigo will host a 25th Anniversary all-star panel featuring Gaiman, Williams and artists Dave McKean and Sam Kieth.

In the meantime, check out the unlettered cover for the first issue below, plus an illustration of The Sandman, Morpheus himself, by JH Williams III.
