Graphic Novel Review: 'Porcelain: Bone China' by Benjamin Read & Chris Wildgoose

"More than a decade has passed since the events of Porcelain: A Gothic Fairy Tale, and Child has become Lady. Inheritor of all of Uncle’s secrets and wealth, she has continued his work, becoming equally as isolated in her quest to refine the Porcelain and put right past mistakes.

With the Porcelain more sought after than ever, Lady comes to the attention of a ruthlessly ambitious General who desires inhuman soldiers for the war effort and won’t take no for an answer. Other, more human, problems rear their head when a handsome young Captain discovers a secret part of Lady’s life.

Faced with impossible choices, Lady must forge her own path through the complexities of love and war."

I visited the Improper Books stand at this year's Thought Bubble Comics Festival in Leeds with the intention of picking up the next volume of 'Porcelain', written by Benjamin Read and illustrated by Chris Wildgoose, and just like the first book - Porcelain: A Gothic Fairy Tale' - it's another great read.

The story mostly focuses on the relationship between Lady and the Captain, as she slowly opens up her heart and secrets to her new found love. The second half of the book descends into betrayal and turmoil for Lady, as the General's plan is ruthlessly revealed.

The story is familiar, but it is very well told and held my attention all the way. It certainly pulls on the heart strings as you feel for Lady as her world crumbles around her.

Chris Wildgoose's art is once again brilliant, a perfect fit. Love the attention to detail, and the characters seem to come alive on the page in an all too believable world.

If you loved the adventures of Child and Uncle from the first book and want to see how she's grown up, love gorgeous comic art and believable characters, then you will certainly enjoy this graphic novel. Highly recommended!

****½ out of 5

If you love the work of Benjamin Read and Chris Wildgoose, I can also recommend their other books - Butterfly Gate and Briar.
