Graphic Novel Review: A Princess Of Mars - A Graphic Novel

"John Carter, a Confederate veteran of the American Civil War, goes prospecting in Arizona immediately after the war's end. Having struck a rich vein of gold, he runs afoul of the Apaches. While attempting to evade pursuit by hiding in a sacred cave, he is mysteriously transported to Mars, called "Barsoom" by its inhabitants. Carter finds that he has great strength and superhuman agility in this new environment as a result of its lesser gravity. He soon falls in with a nomadic tribe of Green Martians, or Tharks, as the planet's warlike, six-limbed, green-skinned inhabitants are known. Thanks to his strength and martial prowess, Carter rises to a high position in the tribe and earns the respect and eventually the friendship of Tars Tarkas, one of the Thark chiefs."

Now, I am very familiar with the original story by Edgar Rice Burroughs, having read the book (a couple of times) in the run up to the recent John Carter movie adaptation directed by Andrew Stanton, as well as the Dynamite comic book series, Warlord Of Mars. I was looking forward to this adaptation by Ian Edginton and illustrated by INJ Culbard, and I wasn't disappointed.

The artwork is of the same standard of the previous graphic novels I've read by INJ Culbard; HP Lovecraft's At The Mountains Of Madness and The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward as well as Conan Doyle's The Hound Of The Baskervilles, so I knew what to expect. By the way, I would recommend those books as well. I thought the artwork fit the story well.

The story, adapted by Ian Edginton, unlike the recent John Carter film, sticks very faithfully to the original book. It did feel like it was edited down a bit though, kind of like a two hour movie condensed into a half hour edit, as I breezed through the pages, but it never detracted from the story and was still an enjoyable read.

If you loved John Carter the movie, then I would recommend picking this up to experience a pretty good adaptation of the original story, equally, I would recommend it to those who have read and enjoyed the original A Princess Of Mars novel too for exactly the same reason.

Game Of Thrones Finale to be Extended

After a pretty dang good second series, and I particularly loved last night's climactic episode, 'Blackwater' (Peter Dinklage at Tyrion Lannister is awesome!), it's good to hear that next week's finale, “Valar Morghulis”, is getting extended, by an extra 10 minutes with a total runtime of 64 minutes, to wrap up a few loose ends before we revisit Westeros for series 3 in April next year!

Goes to show, along with you could say Hustle, Doctor Who, Dexter and The Walking Dead, that short episode runs instead of long-winded series runs with 20 odd episodes keep things compact and to the point, and I much prefer them that way.

So, to keep things salivating until next week's episode, here is the trailer for the series finale. Enjoy

The Dark Knight Rises Prologue

Was browsing Youtube and happened to notice this, the prologue to the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises. Video quality isn't HD but it's decent enough to watch, plus Youtuber Carl Smith has added his fan made tribute afterwards.

After watching it, it feels similar to the prologue / opening Joker bank heist scene from The Dark Knight. And can only be a good thing in my book! Looking forward to watching the film when it's out July 20.

Snow White And The Huntsman Soundtrack clips

I confess, I really love musical score soundtracks. Whether it's movies, TV or from video games, they are about all I really listen to these days. Recent favourites include Michael Giacchino's John Carter score and James Newton Howard's The Hunger Games. And going by the snippets in the clip below I can add Snow White And The Huntsman by James Newton Howard to that list. I really like the Snow White theme that runs throughout the tracks. Soundtrack is out to buy on Monday, with the film out on Friday in the UK.

May 25th: Happy Geek Pride Day!

'Geek' by Lawrence Villanueva
Fly the geek flag loud and proud today, it's Geek Pride Day - a special day dedicated to those of us who do not feel ashamed about showing off our geeky and nerdy passions!

Chosen to celebrate George Lucas' Star Wars, which was premiered on May 25th 1977, Geek Pride Day also shares this special day with Towel Day, for fans of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams, and the Glorious 25 May for fans of Terry Pratchett's Discworld.

The first Geek Festival was organised in Albany, New York around 1998-2000 by Tim McEachern, but it was first celebrated in Spain as "Orgullo Friki" in 2006 and has spiraled all over the world thanks to the internet.

So today, on this special day, no matter whether you're a pop culture geek, a science nerd, a gamer geek or whatever, celebrate and declare your pride at being geek!

John Carter Of Mars - 1950's Trailer

I love this 1950's style fan-made trailer by Krishashenoi93 (aka Krishna Bala Shenoi), it fits the vibe of Disney's John Carter to a tee!

As Krishna says; "Using shots from "John Carter", and sound clips from the trailers of Ray Harryhausen's brilliant "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad", George Reeve's Superman serial, and a Buck Rogers movie, I've made this trailer for Andrew Stanton's "John Carter" in the style of movie trailers from the 50's."

Review: The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward by HP Lovecraft & INJ Culbard

"When the young Charles Dexter Ward becomes fascinated by the history of his wizard ancestor Joseph Curwen, who gained notoriety for haunting graveyards, he attempts to duplicate Curwen's cabbalistic and alchemical feats. It is Ward's doctor who bears witness to the full horror of Ward's results as Lovecraft's psychological mystery unfolds before him."

After reading Culbard's adaptation of Lovecraft's 'At The Mountains Of Madness', 'Charles Dexter Ward' has a similar feel to it. The same superb artwork and narrative that kept me gripped throughout, not having read the original story before.

If you like reading graphic novels and like the works of HP Lovecraft, then you could do no wrong by picking this up.

**** out of 5

On a side note, I'm looking forward to INJ Culbard's artwork in Ian Edginton's graphic novel adaptation of 'A Princess Of Mars', out on May 28 here in the UK. And if these two HP Lovecraft adaptations are anything to go by, and because I love the original story by Edgar Rice Burroughs (from which the film 'John Carter' is based), then it's going to be another great addition to my library.

New Clip for Pixar's Brave

Movie Poster Art: 2001 A Space Odyssey (1968)

I have a real love for movie posters, mostly from growing up in the 80's with the stunning painted posters from the likes of Drew Struzan, Bob Peak, John Alvin, Renato Casaro and Richard Amsel.

Posters of today generally look like generic rubbish that look like they're quickly put together from a Photoshop template (mostly, although not exclusively, just Rom-Coms it would seem). My appreciation now continues with the new breed of poster artists. Artists like Adam Rabalais, Jason Edmiston, Justin Erickson, Ken Taylor, Olly Moss, Tyler Stout and many more that I've previously been featuring in my 'The Art Of Pop Culture' posts as well as the lots of fan art that can be found on websites like Deviant Art and Flickr.

So, to show my appreciation of poster art, I'll be showcasing some of the official posters and art work, as well as some of the fan-made posters, from some iconic and, in most cases, my favourite movies; starting with Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film '2001 - A Space Odyssey'.
