Book Review: Firefly - A Celebration
I may be a late arrival to the Firefly / Serenity 'Verse, but as with most people who have seen the series, I love it. There's just something that when I rewatch it that puts a big smile on my face. And so not having the previous Illustrated Companion Volumes and Still Flying that this book collects, I just had to get it, and just in time for the 10th anniversary too.
This book is gorgeous. From the faux leather effect binding when you first have it in your hands and when start thumbing through the 544 pages, you'll know you have a book that is loving crafted and compiled by people that loved Firefly.
The pages are packed with in-depth interviews with creator Joss Whedon and the cast and crew of the beloved series, plus full, uncut shooting scripts to all the episodes - with notes from cast and crew about each episode. Lots of rare photos of the cast, crew, props and costumes, as well as production art previously unavailable elsewhere are included also. There's also new stories from the writers of the original episodes too.
And exclusively for this edition, there are nine portrait photographs of the cast and a facsimile of one of the bank notes used in the series.
So if you're a fan of the show, and particularly if you haven't already got the three Firefly Companion Volumes that are collected here, I would definitely recommend getting this. Shiny!

Book Review: Star Wars Art: Illustration
It might come to no surprise, and especially to those that visit this blog, that I love art, and especially art and illustration from geek pop culture. It doesn't really get more geek pop culture than with Star Wars, and so I had to splash for the new Star Wars Art book 'Illustration'.
I've not read the previous two books in the Star Wars Art series, Comics and Vision (both now on order), but I have seen some of the artwork that features in this new book across my travels around the internet, and in fact have featured some on this blog. It is nice to have them in a nicely illustrated book though, and it satisfies my hardcover art book fetish!!!
Each of the 170+ pages is filled with simply awesome artwork, some of it previously unpublished and rarely seen from the artists featured. Artists like Ralph McQuarrie (to whom the book is dedicated to), Drew Struzan, Dave Dorman, Hugh Fleming, Tim and Greg Hildebrandt, Tsuneo Sanda, Jerry Vanderstelt, Christian Waggoner and many more.
So if you're a Star Wars fan and love art and illustration, I would highly recommend getting this book.

Movie Review: Marvel's The Avengers (2012) [Bluray]
When
an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security,
Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as
S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back
from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment
effort begins.
I think I must have been one of the few people to NOT catch this at the cinema when it was released earlier in the year, but all good things come to those who wait, so they say, and I've now got a nice shiny bluray to watch.
I must admit that I'm not that much of a fan of Marvel superhero comics and the movie spinoffs, and The Avengers does have that comic book feel to it. Quite different in tone to that other big superhero film, The Dark Knight Rises, but I thought it was much better than I expected and really enjoyed it.
It looks like Marvel releasing the Iron Man, Captain America and Thor movies previously worked, as it removed the need to introduce each of the heroes and just get straight to the action. And lots of action there is too, right from the off! It doesn't really slow down much throughout, especially when 'the other guy' goes green!
I was also really loving the soundtrack from Alan Silvestri, very rousing and fit the film perfectly for me. Thought it was up there with his Back To Future scores.
All in all, this is very much a fun-filled action packed superhero film that definitely pays tribute to previous superhero films and to comic books. As with Marvel films these days, don't forget to watch until the end of the closing credits.
Bluray Extras:
The picture quality and sound are superb, as I would expect from bluray, so no complaints there at all. As I was watching the UK bluray disc, we get deleted scenes, a gag reel, A Visual Journey featurette and the enjoyable Marvel Short film 'Item 47'. Barebones compared to the in depth US release.
If you enjoyed this at the cinemas, then go get it, as it looks and sounds superb on a big TV. If you want a fun filled action film, go get this as well.
