No Film, But Dredd Back As A Comic Book Sequel

'Dredd' was one of my favourite films from last year, but due to a poor box office, more than likely to it being mostly released in 3D, there isn't a chance of a sequel, on the screen at least.

It's now been announced by 2000AD that a comic book sequel to the story began in 'Dredd' will debut in September 2013. No further details were revealed, but it was mentioned there will be an announcement at this year's San Diego Comic Con. Something to look forward to!

Movie Review: Dredd (2012)

With another recent reboot that I was looking forward to seeing (Total Recall - and I enjoyed that too), along comes Dredd by director Pete Travis, written by Alex Garland and starring Karl Urban as Judge Dredd and Olivia Thirlby as new Psi recruit Judge Anderson, the two Judges called out to investigate a crime at 'Peach Trees', one of the 200 story vertical slum neighbourhoods, which just happens to be controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When Dredd and Anderson capture one of the clan’s inner circle for interrogation, Ma-Ma takes control of the entire block and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

Dredd is a much more grittier, violent and darker film than the previous Sylvester Stallone Judge Dredd film, and more similar in tone to the original 2000AD comics. And that is a very good thing, as it needs to be. Director Pete Travis keeps the atmosphere and the pace of the film at the right tempo.

As an action film, it didn't really feel like a Sci-Fi film despite it's futuristic setting, it is very violent, hence the certificate given. But the violence isn't gratuitous and there for the sake of it. It's where it needs to be to carry the story. If anything, it felt like a video game, where you have to blast your way through each level to reach the final boss level at the top.

One of the main highlights was the way slow motion was used, to show the effects of the drug in the movie 'Slo-Mo', that gives users the perception of reality at 1% of real time. It wasn't overused, and worked well during the set pieces and the 3D. The end of the film with Ma-Ma in slow motion is some of the best cinematography I've seen, - broken glass, shattering in slow motion and in 3D glistening in the light, cutting to real time and back to slow motion again - beautifully shot!

I certainly enjoyed it, and if you enjoy shoot-'em-up video games, and enjoy a darker action (but not necessarily sci-fi) film, then I would recommend this to you!

Dredd Motion Comic

Lionsgate has created a new motion comic, as well as a regular comic (unedited compared to the motion comic) for those who'd like to read it themselves in their own gruff voice, for the impending release of Dredd! The comic, written by Matt Smith (current editor of 2000AD and the Judge Dredd Megazine), with artwork by 2000AD regular Henry Flint, provides a backstory to Ma-Ma, Lena Headey's villainous role in the film.

New Red Band Clip For 'Dredd'

The story of Dredd takes place on an Earth ravaged by the Atomic Wars. Survivors of this world live within megacities, gargantuan urban sprawls which protect its citizens from the Cursed Earth, a radioactive desert environment populated by mutants.

The main story takes place in Mega-City One, where its police force, known as judges have the power of judge, jury and executioner to thwart crime. One man, Judge Dredd (Karl Urban), a senior Judge, teams up with rookie Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) to humiliate a drug dealer named Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her traffic of the reality-altering drug Slo-Mo.

New Trailer For (Judge) Dredd Lands

Here's the new trailer for the new Judge Dredd movie, Dredd. Kind of reminds me a bit of Mad Max / The Dark Knight, which is all good in my book!

DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.
