Cool Art: Fantasy 'Doc Savage' Covers by Keith Wilson
I love the art from the pulp fiction sci-fi and action adventure magazines and novels of the 1920s to the 1960s. Some of the cover art and stories were so fantastic, featuring macho men, femme fatales and gizmos and adventures that were out of this world. And out of that era iconic characters like John Carter, Tarzan, Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Conan The Barbarian, Zorro, Solomon Kane, Fu Manchu, The Shadow and Doc Savage first appeared.
Check out these faux Doc Savage covers by Keith Wilson, featuring the Man of Bronze in adventures with other iconic horror, fantasy and sci-fi characters based on the original Bantam book cover art by James Bama and Bob Larkin.

Movie Review: 'Oblivion'
Art by Kilian Eng |
I love my science fiction, and 'Oblivion' felt like a homage to my favourite genre, taking it's recognisable themes from the world of sci-fi.
It was also a stunning looking film. From the design (the bubblecraft and drones for example) and the visuals (cinematography was by Claudio Miranda, who won Oscars for his work on 'Life Of Pi' and 'The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button') and the barren landscapes of a war torn Earth. If ever there was a gorgeous looking film, then this is it!
I also enjoyed director Joseph Kosinski's first film, 'Tron: Legacy', and 'Oblivion' seems to continue his style of gorgeously shot films, and I certainly look forward to more from this director.
The story itself, which is based on an unpublished graphic novel by Kosinski (an illustrated novel will hopefully be released), and without giving too much of things away, has Jack Harper (Tom Cruise), and his by-the-book assistant Vika (Andrea Riseborough) assigned to Earth, its surface devastated after decades of war with the alien Scavs, to repair the damaged drones that scan the planet surface. When Jack discovers a crashed spacecraft, it's contents bring into question everything he believed about the war, and may even put the fate of mankind in his hands. The trailers don't give too much away, for a change, and although towards the end it becomes a bit of a sci-fi mixtape with familiar tropes from some of my favourite sci-fi films, it's still a very enjoyable ride!
The soundtrack by Anthony Gonzalez of M83 and Joseph Trapanese is one of the highlights of the film and very haunting. I've been listening to the score leading up to watching the movie, it's very good as a standalone piece and it does work especially well within the film. It did remind me at times of Daft Punk's score from 'Tron:Legacy' and 'Blade Runner' by Vangelis, which is no bad thing at all!
If you go in expecting a full on action sci-fi with aliens etc, like the trailers may have presented then you may come out of the cinema disappointed. But, if you're after a bit of quality in the same vein as 'Moon' and love science fiction, like I do, then you will enjoy 'Oblivion'. I can't wait for the blu!

Help Fund 'New', A Sci-Fi Short by John Harden
I certainly love my science fiction, and there are several good sci-fi short films out there and in production, and I've featured plenty here on this blog; such as 'Noon', 'Exodus', 'H.U.D.' 'Lisa', 'R'ha', 'Tempo', 'Prospect', 'In The Pines', 'Seed', 'Plurality' and 'Hibernation' to name but a few .
And here's another short film with a sci-fi theme. 'New' is the story of an aging couple who are cryogenically frozen and then reawakened in a distant future, in 20-year-old bodies.
'New' is being funded as a crowd-sourced project, and John Harden, who is behind the project, hoping to raise $22,000. The short is roughly 12 minutes long and will stand alone as a story, but will also serve as proof-of-concept for a feature film he's currently writing.

'Black Sails': Trailer For A Prequel To 'Treasure Island'
This new series from STARZ is set to air next year. The eight-episode first season takes place twenty years before Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic 'Treasure Island' and centres on Captain Flint and his crew. Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) directs the first episode.
Flint, the most brilliant and feared pirate captain of his day, takes on a fast-talking young addition to his crew who goes by the name of John Silver, who has stolen a map to a Spanish Treasure galleon that Flint is after. Threatened with extinction on all sides, they fight against the British Royal Navy for the survival of New Providence Island, the most notorious criminal haven of its day – a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers, a place defined by both its enlightened ideals and its stunning brutality.via

Supergirl is the second of Stanley Lau's (aka Artgerm) Justice Magazine pinup cover girls concepts (Wonder Woman was the first).
Cool Art: 'Star Trek' by Paul Shipper
I'm loving this super cool 'Star Trek' poster by Paul Shipper for Planet Pulp, who have a 'Star Trek' theme this month! Reminds me of the legendary Drew Struzan's poster work!
I wish Hollywood would return to these style of painted movie posters instead of the bland generic photoshop jobs we seem to get these days. Would definitely proudly display them on my wall!
