The start of my re-read of Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' series before the new book, 'The Book Of Dust' book 2 'The Secret Commonwealth', and the new BBC TV series come out.
'Once Upon A Time In The North' is a short prequel story in the 'His Dark Materials' universe featuring Texan aeronaut, Lee Scoresby and his daemon, Hester, and how he first meets the armoured bear, Iorek Byrnison.
Set 35 years before the events of the HDM series, Scoresby crash lands his newly acquired balloon on the Arctic island of Novy Odense, and almost immediately stumbles into a political conspiracy and a renewed deadly rivalry.
It does help if you're already familiar with Pullman's world and characters, so is probably best read after than before the main series, but even if you aren't, there's still plenty to enjoy. It's a short and engaging story that immediately draws you into a tale of conspiracy, politics and honour with likeable Lee Scoresby and his daemon, Hester. A quick and fun read that is a good addition to the 'His Dark Materials' series.
