Geeky Nerfherder 3rd Anniversary & My 2014 Favourites

I can't believe it's been three years since I started this blog! The first post was on this day in 2011. As always, huge thanks to everyone that drops by the blog and that you enjoy my posts of pop culture geekery.

I'm also on almost all the major social media sites too, although mostly Twitter, Instagram and now Tumblr. So if you’re not already following me, but want to keep up with blog posts and other ramblings, here are the links to my profiles on each of these sites:

on Twitter (@GeekyNerfherder)
on Instagram (@thegeekynerfherder)
on Ello (@geekynerfherder)
on FaceBook

And so, once again, it's that time of year, where everybody lists all their favourites of the past year. I have a big love of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, so I'm always going to be biased towards those genres. I've enjoyed quite a lot of the movies I've seen at the cinema this year, enjoyed the books and comics I've read, and also been in awe of a lot of awesome art this year.

Here is a list of some of my favourite things from 2014.

2014 HCG Artist Awards

It's been a great year for pop culture inspired art. And that's been seen nowhere better than at Hero Complex Gallery in Los Angeles, where they have exhibited art show after art show, showcasing the very best pop culture art works from some of the best artists, throughout the year!

And to honour and celebrate the awesome artists they work with, many of which I feature quite regularly on this blog, HCG have launched their inaugural Artist Awards. Rather than single out any one particular artist, they decided to to praise a few artists who went above and beyond. The criteria in determining these awards included:
  • Excellence in Art
  • A Passion to Create
  • Unique Artist POV
  • Continued Personal Growth
  • Strength of Character
  • Loyalty to HCG & Consistent Exhibition with HCG
  • Support of Fellow Artists & the Art Community at Large
And so, onto the inaugural HCG Artist Awards.

In recent years the Locus Awards are presented at an annual banquet, and unlike any other award, explicitly honour publishers of winning works with certificates.

Cool Art: 2014 'Into The Pixel' Collection Revealed

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has announced the 16 winning pieces of the world-renowned 2014 Into the Pixel (ITP) collection.

Created in 2004, the annual ITP art exhibit honours video game artists who continue to push the interactive entertainment art form forward. Co-produced by the ESA and AIAS, the 2014 ITP collection will be shown for the first time at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the world’s premier trade show for computer and video games and related products, from June 10-12, 2014, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
“Into the Pixel celebrates some of the most important contributors to our industry – the brilliant artists and their endlessly imaginative work,” said Martin Rae, president, Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences. “These visual storytellers help breathe life into wide-ranging ideas with a wealth of style and creativity. As these images demonstrate, the line between fine art and the artwork of interactive entertainment continues to evaporate. It is always a great pleasure to unveil the new collection in the Into the Pixel Gallery at E3.”
Check out the 16 winning pieces below, and click to embiggen for a hi-res close up look in all their glory!

Hop over to the Into The Pixel website for a look at the previous winners since 2004 too.
