The Geeky Nerfherder 14th Anniversary & My 2025 Favourites

It's that time again! Today, December 29, is the birthday of this nerdy blog, beginning all the way back on this day in 2011 with the obligatory introductory blog post. Can't quite believe that I've been doing this geeky blog for 14 years!

From the beginning, the aim of the blog has always been to showcase inspiring, cool art and pop culture geekery, from alternative movie poster art, comic art, book and magazine cover art to the artworks on view from the latest new contemporary exhibitions, and the artists that create them.

I don't have as much time to work on the blog as I used to these days, life sometimes getting in the way and all that, but it's still a lot of fun to curate, even after all these years; finding the latest cool art, cover art, print releases and gallery shows, showcasing art from some of my favourite artists in my long running 'Artist Spotlight' series (still working my way through the artist alphabet and currently at the letter S), as well as starting each day with an #ArtOfTheDay post - something random from the Geeky Nerfherder image archives.

I'm still relatively active on the socials and they continue to gain new followers, even with the algorithms doing their best to limit any visibility and with the influx of AI slop (which I will NOT knowingly post on the blog or my socials), the number of followers is still in the thousands! WOW! It's always humbling and amazing to know that other people are also enjoying the artworks I'm posting and hopefully discovering new favourite artists along the way as well. But if you’re not already following, here are the links to my social profiles where I post to:

So that's another year almost in the books! There's still been more than enough good stuff to escape into a geeky and nerdy bubble with, despite everything 2025 has thrown up, and here are a few of my favourites from the past year below.

The Geeky Nerfherder 13th Anniversary & My 2024 Favourites

Today, December 29 is the birthday of this nerdy blog, beginning all the way back, 13 years ago on this day in 2011 with the obligatory introductory blog post.

From the start, the aim of the blog has always been to showcase inspiring, cool art and pop culture geekery, from poster art, comic art, book and magazine cover art to the artworks on view from the latest new contemporary exhibitions, and the artists that create them.

The blog is still a lot of fun to curate, even after all these years; discovering the latest cool art, cover art, print releases and gallery shows, showcasing art from some of my favourite artists in my long running 'Artist Spotlight' series (working my way through artists A-Z and currently at the letter R), as well as starting each day with an #ArtOfTheDay post - something random from the Geeky Nerfherder image archives.

Although I've stopped posting to Twitter/X, and now posting on Bluesky, I'm still active on the socials and they continue to gain new followers, even with the algorithms doing their best to limit any visibility and with the influx of AI slop (which I will NOT post on the blog or my socials), the number of followers is still in the thousands! WOW! Thank you so much!! It's always humbling and amazing to know that other people are also enjoying the artworks I'm posting and hopefully discovering new favourite artists along the way as well. The Geeky Nerfherder 10th Anniversary & My 2021 Favourites

Happy Birthday Geeky Nerfherder!

December 29 2021 marks the 10th anniversary of this nerdy blog, beginning all the way back on this day in 2011 with the obligatory introductory blog post.

From the start, the aim has always been to showcase inspiring, cool art and pop culture geekery, whether it's poster art, comic art, book and magazine cover art or art from the latest new contemporary exhibitions, and the artists that create them.

Throughout those 10 years, the Geeky Nerfherder has been a one man band, just me, Andy B, and it has certainly come a long way since 2011. Even after ten years, it still continues to be a lot of fun to curate; scouring the internet & social media for the latest cool art, print releases and gallery shows, showcasing art from some of my favourite artists in my long running 'Artist Spotlight' series, and starting each day with #ArtOfTheDay - something random, mostly comic art, from the Geeky Nerfherder image archives. I'm also trying to add more reviews of the books and movies I read and watch over the year too.

I also post bonus content on my socials, such as the #OnThisDay feature where I post some of my favourite films, books, comics and shows that were first released or published on a particular date, and any nerdy #NewSwag that I add to my collection as well. These accounts continue to gain new followers, with the number of followers now in the thousands! WOW! Thank you so much!! It's amazing and humbling to know that people are also enjoying the artworks I'm posting and hopefully discovering new artists along the way as well. The Geeky Nerfherder 9th Anniversary & My 2020 Favourites

2020, in hindsight, was not exactly a standard year, and to be honest, just glad we're nearly done with it!

But with all that has gone on in the world outside, and the cancellation of so many activities that I took as the norm - visits to the cinemas, attending comic cons, browsing comic shops, rummaging through secondhand bookstores, etc, there has still been enough things to escape with in a geeky and nerdy bubble; such as as enjoying new TV series, books, comics, and games. And I've listed a few of my favourites from 2020 below.

It's also a Happy Birthday to The Geeky Nerfherder, as it's been 9 years to the day since this nerdy blog began with a blog post way back on this day in 2011. The Geeky Nerfherder, is a one man band, just me, Andy, and has come a long way over the years, but the aim is always to showcase awe-inspiring art, whether it's poster art, comic art, cover art or art from the latest new contemporary exhibitions, and the artists that make them.

My social media profiles, where I sometimes post bonus content, such as the #OnThisDay feature where I post some of my favourite films, books, comics that were first released or published on a particular date, continues to gain new followers, with the number of followers now in the thousands! WOW! Thank you so much!! It's always great to know that people are also enjoying the artworks I'm posting and hopefully discovering new artists along the way as well. But if you’re not already following, here are the links to my social media profiles:

I continue to feature the latest poster releases and highlighting some of the pop culture inspired and new contemporary art shows on the blog, as well as my 'Artist Spotlight' series showcasing art from some of my favourite artists, plus beginning each day with an #ArtOfTheDay post. I'm also trying to add more reviews of the books and movies I read and watch over the year.

As always, a big thanks to everyone that drops by the blog and/or follows me through the various socials I post to. I hope that you continue to enjoy my posts of cool art and pop culture geekery.

The Geeky Nerfherder 8th Anniversary & My 2019 Favourites

2019, the year that was. Another year of watching some really good movies and TV shows, playing some great video games, reading some awesome books and comics, as well as travelling around the UK on nerdy days out at various Comic/Geek Cons and events this year, and getting to meet actors from some of my favourite movies and games, plus some of the finest authors, comic creators and alternative poster artists!

Highlights from 2019 include meeting authors of some of my favourite books: Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (aka James SA Corey) - authors of 'The Expanse' series, Zen Cho (The True Queen), Samantha Shannon (Priory Of The Orange Tree, The Bone Season), Tamsyn Muir (Gideon The Ninth), Tasha Suri (Empire Of Sand, Realm Of Ash) and Ian Livingstone & Steve Steve Jackson (Fighting Fantasy gamebooks), as well as meeting lots of the creators behind some of my favourite comics (way too many mention) at the various geek cons I went to around the UK, especially at the Thought Bubble Comic Festival in Harrogate; plus attending a screening of 'Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back' with a live orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall; as well as attending the 'Final Fantasy: Distant Worlds' concert, also at the Royal Albert Hall.

It's also a Happy Birthday to The Geeky Nerfherder, as it's been 8 years to the day since this nerdy blog began with a blog post way back on this day in 2011. The Geeky Nerfherder has come a long way since then too, but the aim is always showcasing awe-inspiring art, whether it's poster art, comic art or art from the latest new contemporary exhibitions, and the artists that make them.

My social media profiles, where I sometimes post bonus content, such as the #OnThisDay feature where I post some of my favourite films, books, comics that were first released or published on a particular date, continue to gain new followers, with the number of followers now numbering in the thousands! WOW! Thank you so much!! It's always great to know that people are also enjoying the artworks I'm posting and hopefully discovering new artists along the way as well. I'm still featuring the latest poster releases and highlighting some of the pop culture inspired and new contemporary art shows on the blog, continuing my 'Artist Spotlight' series, as well as my #ArtOfTheDay series. I'm also trying to add more reviews of the books and movies I read and watch over the year.

As well as the video project on my YouTube channel of the Geek Cons I go to, I have also been tinkering away on another side project; writing a story I've had in my head for a while. It's no surprise that I'm hugely inspired by science fiction and fantasy, and the story I'm building is definitely taking inspiration from those genres. I'm fairly happy with how it's slowly progressing so far, especially with the world building and the lore of the world. There's still a long way to go yet, but it's been fun to dip into my imagination and get creative in some way, whenever I can.

As always, a big thanks to everyone I've met throughout the year at the Geek Cons I've been to; from the familiar and to the new faces, and of course to everyone that drops by the blog and/or follows me through the various socials I post to. I hope that you continue to enjoy my posts of cool art and pop culture geekery.

Happy Geek Pride Day!

Fly the geek flag loud and proud today, it's Geek Pride Day - May 25th is a special day dedicated to those of us who do not (and should not) feel ashamed about showing off our geeky and nerdy passions!

Chosen to celebrate the release date of the original 'Star Wars' movie, which was released to the world on May 25 1977 (and also happens to be the date that 'Return Of The Jedi' premiered in 1983), Geek Pride Day also shares this special day with Towel Day, for fans of 'The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy' series by Douglas Adams, and the Glorious 25th of May for fans of Terry Pratchett's 'Discworld'.

So today, on this special day, no matter whether you're a pop culture geek, a book nerd, a gamer geek or whatever, celebrate and declare your pride at being geek!

As a purveyor of pop culture geekery myself, mostly Sci-Fi and Fantasy, I have quite a lot of things that I nerd out to so, and in no particular order, here a few of them with an example of each.

The Geeky Nerfherder 7th Anniversary & My 2018 Favourites

And another year of pop culture geekery comes to a close. I've enjoyed watching some really good movies and shows, playing some great video games, reading some awesome books and comics, and travelling around the UK on nerdy days out at various Comic/Geek Cons and events this year, meeting people from some of my favourite movies, games and books, plus some of the finest comic creators and alternative poster artists!

Highlights from 2018 include meeting one of my favourite authors, Andrzej Sapkowski - author of 'The Witcher' series, at a geek con in London; attending a screening of 'Star Wars' with a live orchestra at the Arena Birmingham; as well as attending the opening of Matt Ferguson's art exhibition in Leeds and the Thought Bubble Comic Festival there too, my favourite Geek Con of the year.

It's also been 7 years to the day since the beginnings of this nerdy blog began with a blog post way back on this day in 2011. The Geeky Nerfherder has come a long way since then too, but always with the aim of showcasing cool art and the artists that make them.

The Geeky Nerfherder 6th Anniversary & My 2017 Favourites

And another year of pop culture geekery comes to a close. I've enjoyed travelling around the UK, visiting the various Comic/Geek Cons and events this year, meeting people from some of my favourite movies, games and books, plus some of the finest comic creators and alternative poster artists!

Highlights from 2017 include meeting lots of the cast from the 'Star Wars' movies, past and present, at the various Geek Cons and adding their autographs to my collection; meeting 'Rogue One' director, Gareth Edwards at a BAFTA talk in London; shaking hands with one of my favourite authors, Brandon Sanderson at a book signing in London for his latest book 'Oathbringer'; attending Michael Giacchino's 50th birthday concert at the Royal Albert Hall that also included some very special guests like JJ Abrams, Andrew Stanton, Gareth Edwards, Matt Reeves which was also hosted by Adam Savage; as well as finally meeting Don Thompson and Jack Woodhams, the guys behind Poster Posse and PosterSpy respectively.

It's also been 6 years since I first posted on this blog, way back on this day in 2011. The Geeky Nerfherder has come a long way since then too, with my social media profiles continuing to grow, where I sometimes post bonus content - such as highlighting my comics Pull List each week, gaining new followers on Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter, Ello and more. A Geeky Nerfherder Guide For Geek Con Newbies

I don't just post lots of cool art on my blog and on social media, I also love to get my geek on at pop culture conventions. From the smaller, more intimate Comic cons, to the larger Geek Con events packed with big names stars from the world of pop culture, it's always a great day (or two) out hanging with people who also enjoy geek fandom, meeting your favourite stars, getting their autographs, and browsing the stalls for new swag to add to your collection.

But if it's your first time to a Comic / Geek Con, here's a few tips I've picked up over the years to hopefully make it a more enjoyable start.

What To Wear

Considering the amount of walking around, and standing in lines you'll probably end up doing, first tip is dress for comfort. There's nothing worse than walking around in a sweat with tired and sore feet. So wear a well worn in pair of trainers and comfy socks. And if you're not cosplaying, a comfy pair of jeans/leggings along with your favourite appropriately geeky t shirt will do just nicely too.

Also be prepared for a range of different temperatures at the convention arena. They can be cold, especially early on in the day, whereas once it gets busy, especially on the show floor, the temperatures can rise with all that body heat. Dress in layers. You can always take off a sweater or coat, and stuff it into your bag.

Get A Backpack

Which brings me to my next tip. Bring a backpack. You'll need something to hold the stuff you want signed at the Con, plus any supplies to get you through the day, as well as something to bring home your newly acquired new swag in.

Depending on what you bring with you and what you end up taking home, the weight of your bag could end up increasing considerably. As such I would avoid shoulder/messenger bags. As good as they are, they put all of the weight onto one shoulder, and liable to swing into people when walking on the packed show floor or across a stall when you're checking out the cool swag. It’s better, ergonomically, to spread that weight across both shoulders, and the added benefit is that it allows you to be hands-free without the fear of knocking things over with your bag.

I personally use the Backpack Of Holding from ThinkGeek, strong enough for all the books / comics I like to search for and find at Cons, and big enough to hold a poster tube with the cover flap expanded.

Bring Snacks And Stay Hydrated

Food and drink at conventions can cost a pretty penny, taking valuable funds away from autograph signings and cool swag, and not least the time it takes getting in line to get served and finding that seat, so I'd recommend that you take your own. A couple of bottles of water and some snacks like cereal bars should do the trick to get you through the day.

And if you do want to just sit down and chill out for a bit too, I've found the best times to find a seat is early on in the day and towards the end. Avoid lunch times, they are manic, especially at the bigger Geek Cons.

Bring Protection For Swag

After getting excited about picking up that rare #1 issue, print or signed sketchbook, you don't want to get home and find that its got creased or damaged in your bag. Some recommended items to bring to help protect your new items are bags and boards for any comic books you buy, maybe a plastic case to protect your books, plastic sleeves or a large hardcover book to protect prints or other small sized artwork, and a poster tube to keep any larger prints safe.

Do Some Homework

Before heading to the Comic / Geek Con, do a bit of research and go on to the Con website and make a list of who you want to see, costs for their signatures and any exhibitor stalls you want to visit on the show floor, as well as their location. Many Cons will have a map of who and what is where at the arena, giving you a rough idea of where things are, hopefully making it easier to navigate on the day. And if you plan to make your way to Comic Con this year check out Vegas.com they have affordable Las Vegas hotel and flight package deals.

Bring Plenty Of Money!

From the price of signatures, to all that geek swag at the dealer stalls, as well as the food and drink vendors on site, and even including travelling and accomodation costs, attending a Comic / Geek Con can get pretty expensive. I would recommend sticking to a budget, as it's very easy to go over! Checking the prices of any potential signings and any new swag you might be after online before you head to the venue will give you an ideal range to base your budget on. Better to bring too much than too little. But also remember . . .

Do You Really Need to Buy That?

Remember that you’re going to have to carry your stuff around all day. And are you really getting a good deal? If there’s a show exclusive collectible that's caught your eye, better to get it there and then than paying the inflated prices when they will no doubt surface on eBay afterwards. Same with that comic or collectible to add to your collection. Sometimes you can get special Con deal prices, more often not though, but however, if you can reign in your impulses, you can often save money by getting a lot of the merchandise online for a cheaper price.

Have A Backup Phone Battery

If you're like me and take lots of photos and video at the Geek Cons, then this is vital advice! And sharing those to your favourite social media through the venue's wifi (or 4G if the wifi is terrible) can drain the battery quickly!

If you can, bring a spare battery or better yet, a portable power bank that you can plug in your phone when the power gets low. You don’t want to be without your phone when a great photo opportunity pops up or when you're trying to contact friends when they or you have wandered off.

Enjoy The Cosplay

Lots of people represent their favourite fandoms by cosplaying as their favourite characters. A lot of time and skill is put into the awesome creations that you see when walking around on the show floor and most will only be too happy to pose for photos, just be nice and ask first.

And remember, 'Cosplay is not consent'. A lot of the costumes may look provocative, but the mantra on the show floor is a no-touch policy. Get a bit too friendly and you'll be taking an unscheduled walk out the convention with security!

Check out the cosplay competitions held throughout the day at Cons too. They usually showcase a vast range of cosplaying, from the very simple to the very complicated.

Have Fun

Above all, have fun! There’s so much to see and do that there is nearly always something for somebody to enjoy. What I like best about going to these events is getting to meet the stars from my favourite films, shows and video games and the creators behind some of my favourite comics. The new swag I pick up is pretty cool too. So remember why you came to the event and have a great time.

My Sci-Fi Dream Crate Loot Crate

Loot Crate, is a monthly subscription service that sends a box of 4-6 items, from collectibles, apparel, tech gadgets, art, and other geeky pop culture goodness with a monthly theme right to your doorstep. They have six monthly crates to choose from; the original Loot Crate, Loot Anime, Loot Gaming, Loot Pets, Loot Wear, and Loot Crate DX.

They also have officially partnered crates as bi-monthly subscriptions; the 'Wizarding World Crate' based on the worlds of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts, plus 'Firefly', 'Halo', 'WWE Slam', 'Marvel', 'Sanrio' and 'Minecraft' crates.

They are asking bloggers to put together their 'Dream Crate'. There’s even a chance they’ll pick one lucky blogger’s crate theme to make into a future month’s crate! I'm a huge fan of the Sci-Fi genre, so here is what I'd like to see in a Sci-Fi Dream Crate.

Geeky Nerfherder 3rd Anniversary & My 2014 Favourites

I can't believe it's been three years since I started this blog! The first post was on this day in 2011. As always, huge thanks to everyone that drops by the blog and that you enjoy my posts of pop culture geekery.

I'm also on almost all the major social media sites too, although mostly Twitter, Instagram and now Tumblr. So if you’re not already following me, but want to keep up with blog posts and other ramblings, here are the links to my profiles on each of these sites:

And so, once again, it's that time of year, where everybody lists all their favourites of the past year. I have a big love of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, so I'm always going to be biased towards those genres. I've enjoyed quite a lot of the movies I've seen at the cinema this year, enjoyed the books and comics I've read, and also been in awe of a lot of awesome art this year.

Here is a list of some of my favourite things from 2014.

Geeky Nerfherder 2nd Anniversary & My 2013 Favourites

It's now two years since I started this blog! And big thanks to everyone that visits here and I hope that you enjoy my posts of pop culture geekery.

And so it's that time of year, where everybody lists all their favourites of the past year, and I'm no different. I have a big love of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, so I'm always going to be biased towards those genres and I'd say it's been another good year for SF&F output too. I've enjoyed the movies I've seen at the cinema this year, including some classic movies re-released on the big screen like 'The Princess Bride' and the 'Indiana Jones' Trilogy, plus once again, there has been a lot of awesome art inspired by pop culture, and I've even managed to bag a few awesome prints this year too!

This year I've 'discovered' the pulps and developed a new found love for the Golden Age of Science Fiction & Fantasy from the 1930's to the 1950's, as well as the movies, books, comics etc that have been inspired by the stories of the likes of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Otis A Kline, Leigh Brackett, Robert E Howard, Kenneth Robeson and more, but most of all, I've been enjoying the awesome illustrated art from that era, which I've been serialising on the blog every Monday (and lots more to come too).

But back to the present day, and here is a list of some of my favourite things from 2013.

The 50 Greatest Geek Movies

Ask 10 different geeks what their top 10 favourite movies are, and you’ll get ten different answers, and wildly differing opinions on every film stating why they are so beloved and highly rated! Yes, there will be certain titles that feature in everyone’s lists, and in this list I've seen virtually all of them and they would definitely appear in my list of favourites too. But there are also some omissions as well - no Back To The Future trilogy for a start! No films from Kevin Smith - Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma etc! No Studio Ghibli! That's the thing with these type of lists, they will always miss out on some that others will say that should be on there.

Have a look and see for yourself!
