Sci-Fi, Fantasy & Horror Cover Art: Virgil Finlay
I love the illustrated cover art of the vintage magazines and paperbacks of the 1930s, 40s and 50s - the period often called the 'Golden Age' of pulp Sci-Fi.
In the pages of magazines like Amazing Stories, Argosy, Famous Fantastic Mysteries, Planet Stories, Weird Tales and more, were stories of science fiction, fantasy and horror where writers like Edgar Rice Burroughs, Otis A Kline, Ray Bradbury, Leigh Brackett, Isaac Asimov, EE 'Doc' Smith, Philip F Nowlan, Robert E Howard and HP Lovecraft began their literary careers. These magazines were also the beginnings for the early science fiction and fantasy heroes like John Carter, Buck Rogers, Conan The Barbarian, as well as Doc Savage, The Shadow, The Phantom and more!
Artists took on the challenge of realising the fantastic stories within these magazines, with dramatic scenes of space travel, technological marvels, manly men, damsels in distress, robots and bug eyed monsters on the covers.
Journey back to the early days of science fiction, fantasy and horror, as I'll be showcasing some of the classic illustrated cover art from these magazines and books featuring the likes of Norman Saunders, J Allen St John, Lawrence Sterne Stevens, Robert Gibson Jones, Margaret Brundage and more.
