Cool Art: 'Rock Paper Classics Collection' by Mike Mahle

Rock Paper Classics is a set of classic books with modern, updated cover art from independent artists and was successfully crowd-funded via Kickstarter earlier this year.

Most reprints of classic books seem to be low quality produced editions with bland covers and unappealing formatting. The goal of Rock Paper Books is to offer an alternative that is both aesthetically pleasing, functional and attractive interior layouts, with a consistent look and feel throughout.

The old saying goes that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover… but you shouldn’t have to look past the cover either!
"The idea for the project came about when I decided to catch up on my reading list. There were many classic books I hadn’t gotten around to reading. I wanted a set of books that matched each other and fit well with my apartment decor. So I went down to my local bookstore to check out their offerings. Unfortunately what I found were mass produced, cost cutting, dull looking versions of some of the most acclaimed books of all time. I was very surprised there were no higher quality paperback sets of classic books available.
I brought up the idea with my friend, Patrick Phillips, to hire an artist and create my own collection. I wanted something with clean, modern, vector-based artwork. We did a lot of research, interviewed a few artists, and ended up picking Mike Mahle to create the first five books. To get started, we chose to go with H.G. Wells and Jules Verne classics in order to target the sci-fi market. To be honest I’m not sure if it would have mattered if we chose different books, as the kickstarter was a huge success. We now have 24 titles in the set and are looking to expand to many more in the future. Rock Paper Classics is our first collection but it sure won’t be our last." - David Mautz, developer of the project.

Movie Poster Art: The Classic 'Universal Monsters' Movies

Universal Monsters or Universal Horror, was the name given to a series of horror, suspense and science fiction films made by Universal Studios from 1923 to 1960.

Universal's earliest success in the genre was 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' in 1923 starring Lon Chaney as Quasimodo. Off the back of the success of this movie, Universal continued with such movies as 'The Phantom of the Opera', 'Dracula', 'Frankenstein', 'The Mummy', 'The Invisible Man', 'The Bride of Frankenstein', 'The Wolf Man', and 'Creature from the Black Lagoon', starring legendary actors from the era Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Jr and more.

Cool Art: 'The Phantom Of The Opera' by Laurent Durieux

Dark Hall Mansion presents its second print in their DHM-Seminal Film Series, the 1925 classic, 'The Phantom of the Opera' starring Lon Chaney and designed by artist Laurent Durieux.

The prints go on sale Thursday, June 6th, 2013 at 10:30 AM PST at the DHM Store page.
"The aim of Dark Hall Mansion's DHM-Seminal Film Series is the very bridging of cinema as art and art as cinema. To create beautiful prints for some of the most resonant American and international films, distilling film and imagery while beholden to no specific screening or advertising obligations. Our aim right from the onset was to honor the tradition of vintage film posters while simultaneously releasing our artists from its commercial constraints."
The DHM-Seminal Film Series screenprints are available in two flavours, a 24" x 36" standard edition that's numbered, and limited to 200 copies which costs $65. The other is a 24" x 36" variant edition that's also numbered, and limited to 100 copies and costs $100.

There will also be two very select wood editions, one with the standard artwork (Edition of 10), and another with the  variant artwork (Edition of 10). Both are $250 each and will be available at emovieposter.
