Book Review: 'Binti: The Night Masquerade' by Nnedi Okorafor

I've really enjoyed the 'Binti' series by Nnedi Okorafor, and 'The Night Masquerade' brings the trilogy to a satisfying close.

After travelling through the desert and getting to know the Enyi Zinariya, her father's people, at the end of the last book, 'Home', Binti and Mwinyi, of the Enyi Zinariya, travel back to Binti's home in Osemba after she learns of the Khoush, another tribe, attacking her family and Okwu, her friend.

But when they get back, Binti finds that the village is still reluctant to accept her back into the tribe and to get involved in the simmering feud between the Khoush tribe and the Meduse, Okwu's alien race. So it's up to Binti to attempt to broker a peace between all parties before hostilities break out.

I liked that throughout the story, and trilogy, despite struggling for re-acceptance after seemingly abandoning her people to go to an off world university, experiencing devastating events and some life changing moments, Binti still has the ambition to become more, to grow and change, to embrace different cultures but yet never losing sight of the roots of who she is and her own Himba traditions and culture. 'The Night Masquerade' focuses a lot on the concept of identity, tradition, multiculturalism and how it affects the individual. And it does it very well without being too overbearing or overwhelming the reader.

She is certainly very resilient, and with her attitude, you can't help but love Binti. I also liked Mwinyi and Okwu and the relationship between the three of them. Good to see three very different individuals from three very different backgrounds interact so well with each other.

Its a very compelling and engrossing read, with a few twists and turns along the way for good measure, even though it's a very short read. There is some good world building at play here, and I would love to revisit more in this universe. Recommended, as is the complete trilogy of 'Binti' novellas.

Book Review: 'Artemis' by Andy Weir

I enjoyed this. 'Artemis' by Andy Weir tells the story of Jazz Bashara, a porter on the (only) lunar city of Artemis, who also happens to do a bit of illegal smuggling on the side too. When she's hired to do a bit of sabotage by one of her clients, things don't exactly go to plan, and it's up to Jazz to rectify things and save the city and its inhabitants.

Much like Andy Weir's previous novel, the excellent 'The Martian', the main protagonist is smart, snarky, wise cracking and a quick thinker. A very likeable character. I listened to the audiobook with Rosario Dawson narrating, and she really brought the character of Jazz to life, adding a whole new dimension to 'Artemis' and making it even more enjoyable.

The pen pal interludes between Jazz and a boy from Kenya, Kelvin Otieno, added more depth to Jazz's character too. As the correspondences are over a number of years, from when Jazz is aged 9 up until the present, they give Jazz a back story of what she was like growing up on a lunar city.

There's also a lot detail and science thrown in as well. As 'Artemis' is told in the first person, from Jazz's perspective, she explains all the science and technical stuff in her own indomitable way, a way that is fun and doesn't confuse you or take you out of the story.

Once things start to go awry for Jazz, the pace picks up and it's a thrilling ride to the end, with Jazz getting into various predicaments and her can do attitude getting her out of them. Although in some cases, just barely!

If you enjoyed Weir's 'The Martian', it's very much in the same vein; a wise cracking and likeable protagonist and a dash of science and future-tech set in the near future, all blended into a fun and entertaining story.

Book Review: 'The Legends Of Luke Skywalker' by Ken Liu & JG Jones

'The Legends Of Luke Skywalker' by Ken Liu is a collection of 6 short stories as told by the deckhands of a long haul freighter, the Wayward Current, to pass the time as they travel on their way to Canto Bight.

Each member of the crew shares a tale about Luke Skywalker, some twisting what we already know in Star Wars lore, some sounding plausible, while others sounding just plain ridiculous!

My favourites are 'Fishing In The Deluge' about the people of Lew'el and their faith in the Tide (a similar power to the Force), and 'Big Inside' where Luke and a young biology student find themselves trapped inside a giant Exogorth (a space slug as seen in 'The Empire Strikes Back'). These stories feel the most authentic, and most likely out of all the tall tales in this anthology, which is probably why they're the ones I enjoyed the most.

I also enjoyed the interludes between the tales. It set up the framework and setting of the Wayward Current freighter really well, essentially giving you another story that weaves in and out throughout the book. The illustrations by JG Jones in between each of the stories are really good too, and sets the tone of what's to come.

The story about a flea that lived on Salacious Crumb in Jabba's Palace, was the weakest out of the lot for me though. Entertaining enough, just a bit too ridiculous and felt out of place.

Overall, it's an interesting addition to the new Star Wars books, with a few tidbits that hint at the Luke to become in 'The Last Jedi'. An entertaining read, but not necessarily an essential one.
