Cool Art: 'Gravity' Soundtrack Cover Art by Kevin Tong

Much like what they did for the 'Oblivion' soundtrack last year, Mondo will be releasing a special vinyl edition of Steven Price's 'Gravity' Oscar and BAFTA award winning soundtrack score. The cover art is by Kevin Tong and the album will be available for pre-order on Thursday March 13 from the Mondo website.

Cool Art: 2014 BAFTA Best Picture Nominee Catalogue Covers by La Boca

These catalogue covers by La Boca are for the 2014 British Academy Film Awards, that will be announced this Sunday. You can see last years BAFTA cover illustrations by Jonathan Burton here.

Each image is based on an interpretation of the 5 Best Film category nominations: Gravity, American Hustle, Captain Philips, 12 Years A Slave and Philomena.

They are also available as either A2 size (594 x 420 mm) or A1 size (841 x 594 mm) prints on Hahnemühle photorag 308gsm, signed and numbered with A2 prints in a very limited edition of 14 only for £120, and the A1 limited to just 4 prints for £200!

Geeky Nerfherder 2nd Anniversary & My 2013 Favourites

It's now two years since I started this blog! And big thanks to everyone that visits here and I hope that you enjoy my posts of pop culture geekery.

And so it's that time of year, where everybody lists all their favourites of the past year, and I'm no different. I have a big love of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, so I'm always going to be biased towards those genres and I'd say it's been another good year for SF&F output too. I've enjoyed the movies I've seen at the cinema this year, including some classic movies re-released on the big screen like 'The Princess Bride' and the 'Indiana Jones' Trilogy, plus once again, there has been a lot of awesome art inspired by pop culture, and I've even managed to bag a few awesome prints this year too!

This year I've 'discovered' the pulps and developed a new found love for the Golden Age of Science Fiction & Fantasy from the 1930's to the 1950's, as well as the movies, books, comics etc that have been inspired by the stories of the likes of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Otis A Kline, Leigh Brackett, Robert E Howard, Kenneth Robeson and more, but most of all, I've been enjoying the awesome illustrated art from that era, which I've been serialising on the blog every Monday (and lots more to come too).

But back to the present day, and here is a list of some of my favourite things from 2013.

'Little White Lies' 50th Issue Anniversary Prints

For their 50th issue, movie magazine Little White Lies commissioned 50 original illustrations by some of the world's leading creative talent. Their challenge? To visually interpret the last 50 years of cinema, focusing on a single film between 1964 and 2013.

They are also available as limited edition A3 prints and cost £18 from the Little White Lies store.

Movie Review: 'Gravity'

In the month between the US release and the UK release, there was a ton of hype about 'Gravity'. Some calling it THE cinematic experience of the year, some calling it the most stunning looking film, some saying it is Sandra Bullock's virtuoso performance, a must see movie! After seeing it for myself, I kind of have to agree on all points.

We join veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) and rookie Ryan Stone (Bullock) on a repair mission to the Hubble Telescope, until the debris from a destroyed satellite causes chaos and so begins the thrill ride that is 'Gravity'.

And it is definitely a thrill ride of emotions, as we follow the two astronauts, with the focus on the rookie and how she copes with the frankly terrifying ordeal and her emotional journey of self-belief and survival. Throughout the 90 minutes, we're with her as she experiences the anxiety, the disorientation, the despair, the vulnerability, the danger, the hopelessness, the desperation, then the belief, hope, and relief! I was exhausted by the end! And I can positively say that I've not been as gripped throughout a movie as I have this one.

The VFX work is simply stunning. Not overblown or in your face, but giving you that sense of realism as if you've been watching a NASA video. I thought that the musical score by Steven Price worked really well too and helped to expand the emotional feel of Stone's ordeal.

They say it's best to experience it in 3D on the biggest screen you can, I went to The Giant Screen at the Millennium Point in Birmingham. At 72 foot wide, that's as big as screen as I'm going to get and was definitely well worth the experience as it felt as I was up there in orbit with them.

Overall, 'Gravity' is well worth the hype that has been thrown at it. Tense, emotional and a superb performance from the focal star, what more do you need!

Academy Award® winners Sandra Bullock (“The Blind Side,” “The Proposal”) and George Clooney (“Up in the Air,” “Syriana”) star in “Gravity,” a heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space. The film was directed by Oscar® nominee Alfonso Cuarón (“Children of Men”). 

Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone - tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. 

The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.
