Leamington Spa Comic Con Back For A 5th Year!

Five is the magic number for Leamington Spa’s comic book convention, Leam Comic Con, as the independently run show gears up for its fifth annual show on Saturday October 5 2019 at All Saints Parish Church. 

The comics-focused show, which promotes independent creators and publishers alongside mainstream guests, has been keeping comic con about comics since it burst unexpectedly onto the convention scene in 2014. 

Show Creator, Dan Mallier, said: “Leam Comic Con continues to champion comics, creativity and community, but none of it would have been possible without our early supporters who crowdfunded the show into existence.” 

The origin of Leam Comic Con began when 74 comic book fans donated £1,796 to fund the first show, which was later acknowledged as a local cultural asset winning the ‘Outstanding Achievement’ accolade at the 2015 Leamington Business Awards. 

The 2019 show will bring a strong line-up of writers and artists for Britain’s cult sci-fi comic 2000AD, including John Wagner an American-born, British comics writer best known for co-creating the iconic 2000AD character Judge Dredd and artist Dan Cornwell. 

Fans who prefer their comics a little darker can meet Jamie Delano the first writer of the comic book series Hellblazer and Mike Carey who wrote the devilish good spin-off comic, Lucifer and author of the popular novel ‘The Girl With All The Gifts’. 

Hannah Berry the UK’s current and first Comics Laureate will also be in attendance. The job is described as an “ambassadorial and educational role” for the comic genre, intended to raise awareness of the impact comics can have on literacy and creativity. 

For the last five years Leam Comic Con has delivered a unique, fun-filled day for comic-book fans and families. More than 4,500 people have attended a show and its organisers have given away 5,000+ comics to inspire a new generation of comic fans. 

While big names in the comic book industry help attract crowds, Leam Comic Con continues to support independent creators and publishers, giving them an affordable platform to raise the profile of their work with 80% of tables reserved for ‘small press’. 

Dan Mallier added: “We’ve seen over 20 small press comics launched at our shows. There’s no room for egos. Whether you’re a well-known name or indie creator, it’s your talent and approachable manner that ultimately depicts your success at our show.” 

Leam Comic Con is a family-friendly show with its organisers choosing not to charge parents for tickets for children under the age of 13. Over the past five years 1,500 free Children’s tickets have been snapped up so young ones can enjoy the show, creative workshops and meet superheroes without breaking the bank of mum and dad. 

Doors for the 2019 Leam Comic Con at All Saints Church, Priory Terrace, Leamington Spa CV31 1AA will open Saturday October 5 at 10am for advance ticket holders. The general public can pay on the door from 11am with last admission at 4pm before the doors close at 5pm. Adult tickets cost £8 in advance. Children under 13 are free with a paying adult. Concessions are charged at £5 and registered carers are free.

John Wagner & Al Ewing Make An Appearance At This Year's Leam Comic Con

My local comic con, the award winning Leamington Comic Con, returns on Saturday April 14 at the All Saint’s Parish Church, bringing comic-book royalty to the Town.

Each year the independently-run convention has upped its game and delivered a unique and fun-filled day for comic-book fans and families. This year, the convention has secured two huge names from the comic-book industry to attend - John Wagner an American-born, British comics writer best known for co-creating the iconic 2000AD character, Judge Dredd and Al Ewing, writer for Marvel Comics.

John Wagner has specially chosen to launch his latest book, 'Rok of The Reds' at the show, giving Leam Comic Con 2018 attendees the chance to purchase copies (while stocks last) before it officially hits the shelves on Monday April 16, published by BHP Comics!

'Rok of The Reds' is a story about football - the beautiful game - and aliens. Aliens? Yes! It's about the meeting of mighty extra-terrestrial Rok of Arkady and bad boy footballer Kyle Dixon. When these two come together, it all kicks off - with explosive consequences.

Al Ewing began his career writing stories in the five-page Future Shocks format for 2000AD and eventually moved on to regular stints on 'Judge Dredd'. He wrote the 'Mighty Avengers' and 'Loki: Agent of Asgard', and has more recently written 'New Avengers', 'US Avengers', 'The Ultimates' and 'Rocket' and 'Royals' for Marvel Comics.

The event will once again host a Cosplay Competition to find the best dressed adult (over 16) and child (16 and under) with a chance to win a Leam Comic Con trophy. Children under 13 are still free to attend with a paying adult and can take advantage of free colouring-in stations and workshops with comic-book artists.

Doors open at 10am for advance ticket holders and the general-public can pay on the door from 11am. Last admission is 4pm with the doors closing at 5pm.

Entry costs £8 for adults, £6 for concessions and are free for children under 13.

Spa Wars: Celebrating of 40 Years of 'Star Wars'

'Spa Wars' is Leamington’s celebration of 40 years of Star Wars, bringing 10 cast members from A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, The Return of The Jedi and The Force Awakens to All Saint’s Parish Church, Priory Terrace, Leamington Spa, CV31 1AA, on Saturday December 2.

Being held just before the greatly anticipated 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' is released, Spa Wars promises a galactic showcase fit for fans, collectors and families looking for a fun day out or a spot of early Christmas shopping.

The event is being organised by the team behind the Town’s very own comic convention – Leam Comic Con – in partnership with Comic Connections from Banbury.

Lisa-Marie Nelson, from Leam Comic Con, said: “Spa Wars is the perfect opportunity for fans to meet original Star Wars cast members and get hyped for the latest movie. We have robotic droids, professional cosplayers, plenty of comics, collectibles and original art for sale and even a Luke Skywalker Christmas Grotto for the kids!”

A major coup for collectors on the day will be the appearance of the 3 fans who’ve helped stationery brand, Helix, to re-launch its 1970’s Star Wars stationery range. At a recent auction, a collection of 'Star Wars' pencil cases and soap bars launched to promote the film's original release in 1977, sold at auction for almost £5000! One of the fans instrumental in reviving the much loved range is Leamington’s own Craig Spivey from Spivey Creative.

The UK R2 Builders Club will also be there. They are a group of droid builders with their own screen accurate self built Astromech droids as well as various other droids including Mouse Droids, Chopper & BB8. Some of the builders have been fortunate enough to be involved in some high profile Lucasfilm events and have even worked on the recent ‪Star Wars movies‬.

The R2 Builders attend as many events as they can throughout the year, entertaining guests at various events and raising money for charity. The Spa Wars Skywalker Christmas Grotto will give children the opportunity to collect a gift from Santa while raising money for the UK R2 Builders club!

Gaming fans will be able to take part in free Star Wars table top games on the day hosted by Leamington’s Crescent Gaming Consortium, while film buffs can grab tickets for the next Leamington Underground Cinema event, a very special screening of Star Wars documentary Elstree 1976 to be held at the Church in the same evening.

'Spa Wars: A Star Wars Celebration'

The Force has awakened and Spa Town Comics, the team behind the award winning Leam Comic Con, strikes back with the force that is Comic Connections, Oxfordshire's longest running comic book shop, to bring you 'Spa Wars: A Star Wars Celebration'.

Spa Wars is a Leamington celebration of all things Star Wars. They will be hosting signings, photo shoots, talks, Q&A's, table top gaming, comics, collectibles, Star Wars artwork and the Leamington Underground Cinema are hosting a special screening of the Star Wars documentary 'Elstree 1976', with the films producer in attendance.
The epic adventure begins on Saturday the December 2 at All Saints' Church, Priory Terrace, Leamington Spa CV31 1AA in anticipation of the release in the next episode of the 'Star Wars' Saga, 'The Last Jedi'.

SPECIAL GUESTS

• Hugh Spight, an Oxford Puppeteer who played several background roles in 'Star Wars: Return of the Jedi' like a Gamorrean guard, a Mon Calamari and an Elom. Mr Spight’s name was famously misspelt during the credits of the film, so this and the fact he is relatively new to the comic con circuit, should put his signature in hot demand for Star Wars fans.

• Scott Richardson played the one legged Gabdorin pirate First Mate Quiggold in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. Conversing with Finn, in Maz Kanata's castle scene and subsequently assisting his escape, this was Scott's first film appearance. As a below the knee leg amputee, Scott has played several specialist roles in both civilian and military environments, including most recently an injured soldier in the 2017 'Wonder Woman' film.

• Paul Warren is a British actor known for playing characters in Sci-fi and fantasy films under heavy prosthetic makeup or in creature suits. He is probably best known as 'Varmik' the hassk thug in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens', but has also played aliens in 'Guardians of the Galaxy', 'Thor: The Dark World' and was one of the Skinny Steve Rogers body doubles in 'Captain America: The First Avenger'.

• Nathalie Cuzner was cast as the role of PZ-4CO in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. PZ-4CO, nicknamed "Peazy", is a protocol droid serving in the Resistance and assisting General Leia Organa. Peazy appears several times throughout the film, plus has a name check and of course her own action figure. The droid made her first appearance in the novel 'Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure'. Nathalie first became known for her work outside of 'Star Wars' as a Creature Actor in the cult TV series, 'Doctor Who'.

• Chris Bunn's most famous roles were in the original 'Star Wars' trilogy where he was a Stormtrooper in 'Star Wars: A New Hope' and an astronaut in the famous cantina scene. Chris later went on to work in the original sequels 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 'Return of the Jedi'. Chris also worked on 'Superman I and II', plus numerous war films, as well as many of the Carry On films. He has worked on some very popular TV shows over the years such as 'The Sweeney', 'Minder' and 'The Avengers'.

• Derek Lyons worked on the first Star Wars film, 'A New Hope' in 1976 - this was in fact his first job within the film business. He was chosen to appear as a Medal Bearer and Massassi Guard at the end of the film. Derek won parts in many major films made in England, including, 'Flash Gordon', 'Krull', 'The Living Daylights', 'Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade' plus many others. He has also worked on TV productions and was PC Craig Lovell in 'The Bill' from 1987 to 1991.

• John Chapman's love affair with film started when he was cast as X-Wing Pilot "Red 12 Drifter" in the original Star Wars Movie - 'A New Hope'. John was also interviewed for Elstree 1976 a documentary which filmed Actors and supporting Artists about their time on the set of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977).

• Bill Hargreaves, the prop master behind legendary creations that include IG-88, probe droids, mynock, and Jabba's gatekeeper. In the ’70s, he was an expert in concrete fabrication with his own fencing and gardening firm. In 1977 he met the legendary Harry Lange, who was the art director on 'The Empire Strikes Back'. Bill made the hyperspace jump into the film business and created some of the most memorable robots and props in the galaxy.

• Alan Harris has played several different roles in the Star Wars movies, most notable for portraying Bossk in The Empire Strikes Back. Harris is has the rare distinction of appearing in all three films of the original Star Wars trilogy (as well as as the first prequel, The Phantom Menace), and playing a Stormtrooper in all three films.

• Catherine Munroe trained at the Italia Conti Stage School in London she has appeared in numerous films and TV including 'The Shining' and 'The Empire Strikes Back' she has also appeared in three episodes of 'Doctor Who'. She's played the part of the Bounty Hunter, Zuckuss and also the part of 'Snaggletooth woirkettle' in 'The Empire Strikes Back'. Catherine has been in the business over forty years with a wealth of knowledge and experience in the TV and Film industry.

Free Comic Book Day At Spa Town Comics

My local comic shop, Spa Town Comics, run by the award-winning Leam Comic Con team – is partnering with Leamington Library to host not one, but two Free Comic Book Day events on Saturday May 6.

Free Comic Book Day is a worldwide celebration held annually on the first Saturday in May, and Spa Town Comics, situated in the lower mall of The Royal Priors Shopping Centre in Leamington Spa, will be giving away free comics from its stand between 10am - 5pm while stocks last.

The team will also be popping up at Leamington Library to give away free comics between 11am - 2pm as well as hosting two events; a talk on self-publishing by comic book creator Rees Finlay at 12pm, who’ll also be giving away copies of his title 'High Priestess', and an art workshop at 1pm with artist Darrell Thorpe helping kids create their own monsters. Both the talk and workshop are free mini events at the library although space is limited to 20 spaces so people are being encouraged to book a slot for free in advance to avoid disappointment.

Lisa-Marie Nelson, Co-owner of Spa Town Comics and Leam Comic Con, said: "Free Comic Book Day is an annual event for comic book shops to celebrate the awesome medium of comics. It’s the perfect opportunity to introduce family and friends to the world of comics and support your local comic book shop and library."

Comic book fans can pop by Spa Town Comics and grab a comic for free. Those who support the store and purchase something will be rewarded with another free comic and encouraged to head to the library to pick up another!

Free comics include: Secret Empire, Rick & Morty, 2000AD, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dragon Ball Super, Guardians of The Galaxy, Barbie, SpongeBob, Star Trek, Doctor Who and many more, but once they’re gone they’re gone.

Leamington Comic Con Back Bigger And Better!

My local comic con, the award winning Leamington Comic Con, returns on Saturday March 25 at the Royal Spa Centre bringing big name guests and local talent.

This year, high profile guests at the Comic Con include; Marc Laming whose artwork has appeared in Marvel's 'Star Wars: Force Awakens', John-Paul Bove, artist best known for his work on 'Transformers' for IDW and 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' for Panini and 'Judge Dredd' for 2000AD, Christian Wildgoose, co-creator and artist of the highly acclaimed 'Porcelain' books, and new artist on DC Comic's 'Batgirl', and Sonia Leong, a multi-award winning Manga creator who has worked for TokyoPop, Self-Made Hero, Image Comics, Hachettes, VIZ Media and Titan Comics to name a few, is also confirmed.

Dan Mallier, Creator of Leam Comic Con, said: "This year’s event is going to be the best yet. With two successful conventions under our belt and the awesome support of Leamington behind us, we’ve attracted some big comic book guests."

Leam Comic Con is one of few comic cons that is centred on comic books rather than straying into TV and Film. Doing so has earned the event rave reviews within the industry and enabled it to provide a platform for talented local artists and creators to showcase their work alongside some of the mainstream.

"It’s important to us that we promote literacy and support local talent. We have Leamington Artist Chris Oxenbury attending this year and a fantastic young Artist Tom Malin from Evesham," Dan said.

Leam Comic Con also recently ran a competition (The Small Press Factor) to find the next big thing on the indie scene. The winners were the team behind The King’s Legacy Comic who won the chance to exhibit for free at this year’s convention.

The 2017 convention is being held at the Royal Spa Centre on Newbold Terrace offering plenty of space for comic book fans and colourful cosplayers to mingle.

Once again the event will host a Cosplay Competition to find the best dressed adult (over 16) and child (16 and under) with a chance to win a Leam Comic Con trophy, but this year entrants will also get a chance to walk down their very own catwalk!

Children under 13 are still free to attend with a paying adult and can take advantage of free face painting, balloon modelling and colouring in stations.

Doors open at 10.30am to customers with pre-bought tickets. Paper tickets can be bought from Spa Town Comics (Thursday – Sunday) in the Lower Mall of The Royal Priors Shopping Centre or online via the Royal Spa Centre. There will be a pay on the door option from 11.30am until 4pm with the doors closing at 5pm.

Shout-out To My Local Comics Shop; Spa Town Comics

I first got into comics during the 90's. Going into my local independent newsagent and eyeing the cover art standing out from the usual magazines and other comics on the racks. It was never the big, shiny and colourful superhero comics but the dark and mysterious characters and worlds of titles such as 'The Sandman', 'Swamp Thing', 'John Constantine: Hellblazer' and 'Preacher' that caught my attention. With the lure of the superb cover art by the likes of Dave McKean, Charles Vess, and Glenn Fabry, reeling me in, the stories and artwork inside got me forever hooked.

Back then, the chance of finding issues regularly were very rare, especially as most of the titles I was reading, usually from Vertigo Comics, Epic Comics or from a new imprint that had recently just started called Image Comics, were classed as for 'Mature Readers' (if you read any of those issues then you'll understand) and not always on the racks. Otherwise, seeing as there wasn't a local comic shop in town, you had to get your copies through subscription mailorder (no ordering through the internet back then) or wait for bookshops to stock the collected editions.

Flash-forward a few years and these days it's a lot easier. Plenty of places online and Comic Cons to pick up issues from. Until recently, there was never a dedicated place for me to locally get my favourite monthly titles and other comics goodies from without having to travel to Banbury, Birmingham or further afield. But thanks to the success of the inaugural Leamington Comic Con in 2014, it showed that there was demand for comics and geekiness in a middle class town in the middle of England.

And from the seeds planted at the Comic Con, the next Leamington Comic Con is March 25, a pop up comic shop, Spa Town Comics, has now planted roots firmly in the town.


Run by Dan Mallier and Lisa-Marie Nelson, the collective brains behind the award winning Leamington Comic Con, the pop up store, situated on a stall in the Royal Priors Shopping Centre, in less than a year has already become a one stop shop for avid comic fans, including myself. Instead of the sometimes sterile atmosphere at larger stores, Spa Town Comics is anything but! Whether it's Dan, Lisa or whoever else is attending the store, they are more than willing to talk comics and geekiness with you. And they certainly know their stuff!! The friendliness of the staff and the comics banter is very welcoming and just one of the reasons to visit. They will only be too happy to help recommend titles that they think you might enjoy based on what you initially buy from them.

I've since cancelled subscriptions I've had elsewhere and re-continued the titles with Spa Town Comics to purposely support my local comic shop. I now have several titles listed with them, and they will include the variant covers, if you ask for them and if they can get them. The subscription service they have is brilliant, and a cinch to set up.

Despite only having a stall, they hope to have a more permanent store, they have packed it full of comics, merchandise from T shirts to Funkos, and more. They have a great selection of current and older comics, they even have a few signed ones too! And if it's back issues you're after, their collaboration with Comic Connections in Banbury, means that if they don't have an issue at hand they will try and get hold of it for you. Always ones to champion the small press comics scene, they also stock a growing range of small press titles and prints from local artists.

But they don't just sell comics either, Spa Town Comics also promote literacy and support local talent, and work with the local library to promote reading, host drawing events, appear at local comic cons, and put on other events to allow others to celebrate and share their hobbies and interests and make new friends.

#CoolArt: Darrell Thorpe (aka Forpe) Appearing At Spa Town Comics December 10

Darrell Thorpe (aka Forpe), is bringing his infectious creative nature to Spa Town Comics in the Royal Priors Shopping Centre on Saturday December 10.

The Death By Heroism creator will be sketching live at the comic book stand, what he will be painting and drawing nobody (including Darrell) knows but he promises it will be EPIC.

Darrell has created three one off prints designed exclusively for Spa Town Comics and the people of Leamington. Shoppers who purchase something from Spa Town Comics on the day will receive a raffle ticket and be entered into a prize draw to win one of Darrell's one off hand painted creations.

Darrell Thorpe said: "It's important for artists, creators and independent stores to work together. People rarely get to see how our things are created and the time we put into our creations. It’s hard for the public to meet independent creators, so I thank Spa Town Comics for championing the little guys like me."

Comic Con Duo To Launch Leamington Spa Comic Shop

Owners of Leamington Spa’s award-winning comic convention are to open a 12 month pop-up comic shop – Spa Town Comics – in The Royal Priors on Saturday September 3 2016.

Spa Town Comics will sell comics and trade paperbacks from mainstream publishers like DC and Marvel, while hoping to introduce Leamington Spa residents to new reads from the smaller and independent publishers.

Dan Mallier of Spa Town Comics and Leam Comic Con, said: “We can’t wait to give local comic fans the opportunity to buy the comics and collectibles they love in their own town. If we get the same heroic support for our pop-up as we do for our convention, we’re positive Spa Town Comics can become a permanent fixture in Leamington.”

Comic fans can sign-up for subscriptions to order their favourite weekly comics, or purchase back issues thanks to the team’s partnership with Banbury retailer, Comic Connections.

While Spa Town Comics aims to become a one stop shop for avid comic fans, the team will also use their experience and contacts gained from running Leam Comic Con to champion creativity within the industry and support the local community through projects and events.

Leam Comic Con Celebrates 'Small Press Day' By Launching #SmallPressFactor Competition

My local Comic Con, Leamington Spa’s award-winning Leam Comic Con, is offering independent comic creators the chance to raise their profile and win a table at their 2017 event.

Launching on Small Press Day 2016, a celebration of self-publishing, DIY culture, and grassroots comics across the UK and Ireland on Saturday July 9, independent comic creators are being asked to enter online and submit a short video about themselves, the comic and the inspiration behind it.

"Leam Comic Con is dedicated to keeping our comic con about comics and a big part of that is supporting small press creators and local talent alongside mainstream comics," said Dan Mallier, creator of Leam Comic Con. "By launching the 'Small Press Factor' competition, we’re aiming to discover talented independent comic book creators and give them a helping hand in promoting their work."

Entrants must be an independent creator that has published a comic on or after January 1 2015 and will have until November 30 2016 to submit their work for judging. The judging panel, made up of industry experts and enthusiasts, will be rating entries on originality, artwork, lettering and story. The winner will be declared by December 1 2016.

The winner will get a free exhibitor table at the next Leam Comic Con to be held at The Spa Centre on March 25 2017 as well as promotional support before and during the event – and will also be awarded the Small Press Factor 2016 logo for use on their marketing material and the opportunity to appear on a future edition of The Awesome Comics Podcast.

• You must be the creator, or have permission from the creator of an independent comic book (small press) that must have been published on or after January 1 2015.

• Entrants must be available to exhibit at Leam Comic Con 2017 on March 25 at the Spa Centre in Leamington Spa.

You will be required to complete an online entry form and submit a short video, no longer than 3 minutes in length between July 9 and midnight on November 30 2016.

Leamington Spa Comic Con Returns Bigger And Better For 2015!

My local comic con, Leamington Comic Con, returns on Saturday October 17 promising a bigger venue, more comics and big industry names.

After a very impressive debut last year at the Leamington Pump Rooms, this year’s convention will be held at the larger The Assembly on Spencer Street, Leamington Spa, CV31 3NF between 10.30am-5pm.

Dan Mallier, Creator of Leamington Comic Con, said: “This year’s event is shaping up to be one heck of a comeback. We’ve more than enough for avid comic fans, as well as cosplayers and families looking for a great day out.”

Leamington Comic Con received rave reviews within the industry last year, which has helped it to attract a star studded line up for its 2015 return.

Internationally renowned David Lloyd, will be the biggest draw, having co-created 'V for Vendetta' with Alan Moore, and designed V’s Guy Fawkes inspired mask. Lloyd will be promoting his latest venture, 'Aces Weekly' as he hosts a panel talk, but will also be sketching and signing autographs.

Simon Furman, comic book writer notable for Transformers comics and Andrew Wildman, British artist best known for his work on Marvel titles such as Thundercats, The Real Ghostbusters and Transformers, are also confirmed.

“The event’s page on Facebook is already showing over 1,200 people are planning to
attend, so we’re expecting swarms of excited comic fans and colourful cosplayers, but
they’re will also be plenty to do for families with young children too,” added Dan.

Priority entrance will be given to ticket holders, but people can also pay on the day.

Leamington Spa Comic Con 2014 . . . A Geeky Grand Day Out!

Despite their name, comic cons seem to be pushing comics to the side these days in favour of a more mainstream expo focussing more on movies, TV shows and video games. But it's always good that cons like, Thoughtbubble in Leeds and the Lakes Comics Art Fest in Kendal, to name but two, are true to their comic roots. And it's great that there are smaller independent comic cons springing up too.

On Saturday October 18, Leamington Spa hosted it's first ever Comic Con. Independently organised by Dan Mallier, this was an event funded by the town for the town -  through a successful Indiegogo crowdfunding project - of which I pledged my bit too, and for a first time event it was pretty busy!

Almost a 1000 comic book fans passed through the doors of Leamington Spa's Royal Pump Rooms and browsed the tables of small press independent comic publishers, artists and vendors. Some were donning their favourite comic T shirts and some were dressed up as their favourite heroes and villains. There was even a cosplay competition with Batman, who else, walking away the winner.

The independent comics community was well represented in Leamington Spa with several creators, artists and publishers in attendance, including Neil Gibson, from T Publications and creator behind the bestselling 'Twisted Dark' series, giving an educational and informative talk about the "5 ways that comics can help you in work and study", and there was also a Q&A session with Mike Garley and the creative team behind The Kill Screen.

All in all, I really enjoyed the Leamington Spa Comic Con, and of course, came back with some cool comic swag too. A geeky grand day out, I hope it's back for more in 2015!

Less Than Two Weeks Until Leamington Spa's First Comic Con!

On Saturday October 18 at 10:30am, the doors of the Royal Pump Rooms will open for Leamington Spa’s first comic convention, an event funded by the Town for the Town!

Local lad, Dan Mallier raised just shy of £1,800 through a crowdfunding campaign to launch Leamington Comic Con, which will see writers, illustrators and fans celebrate comics and memorabilia.

Commenting on the forthcoming convention, he said: “I’m blown away by the support I’ve had to get Leamington Comic Con off the ground, from donators, traders, the local press and those willing to give up their spare time to help spread the word.”

Leamington Comic Con is being held at The Royal Pump Rooms, which is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, and will focus on giving independent publishers, writers and
illustrators a platform to showcase their talent.

The event will feature the likes of Al Davidson, writer of ‘The Spiral Cage’ and owner of The Astral Gypsy Art Studio and Bookshop in Coventry’s Fargo Village, Neil Gibson of T Publications and writer of Kindle Bestseller ‘Twisted Dark’, and Northampton’s Borderline Press who give a spotlight to the best European and new unpublished comic book talent.

Phil Hall, Borderline Press, said: “Our intention is to support ‘the small’ rather than to continue to feed ‘the big’. That’s why we support Leamington Comic Con, because it’s new, it’s ambitious and the organisers are clearly attempting to put on a professional event.”

Increasing your comic library aside, Neil Gibson will also be presenting ‘5 ways how comics can help you in work and study’, followed by a Q&A hosted by Mike Garley (‘Adventure Time’ and ‘Wallace and Gromit’ comics) to talk about his latest project ‘The Kill Screen’.

Neil Gibson, T Publications, said: “We want to do all we can to help comics in the UK, and having regional cons with motivated talent like Dan is a firm step in the right direction. Some people organise cons for the money, but Leamington is clearly a work of passion.”

While comics will be the star attraction, there’s plenty more planned - a super hero / villain
photo booth, face painting, caricatures, a cosplay competition, and entertainment courtesy of Star Wars costuming group the UK Garrison and Jester Styles the Magician.

Since his fundraising success, Dan has harnessed the power of social media to excite more than 500 comic lovers, cosplay fanatics and those looking for a unique family day out to buy a ticket.

While advance tickets are now sold out, Comic Book Shopper tickets (entry valid from 2.30pm) are currently still available and you can still pay on the door on the day with last entry 3.30pm (the event is on until 4pm).

Commenting on tickets sold, Dan said: “It’s been nine months since we launched this project and if you’d have told me then we’d have sold over 500 tickets prior to the event, I would have recommended you check into Gotham’s Arkham Asylum.

“While we can’t wait to see you all, the venue is intimate so please be patient while queuing and take some time to soak up the atmosphere – there’s plenty of comics for everyone!”

Details For The First Ever Leamington Spa Comic Con

Back in February, I highlighted the Indiegogo campaign by Dan Mallier hoping to launch Leamington Spa's very first Comic Con at The Royal Leamington Spa Pump Rooms on Saturday October 18. Well, that Indiegogo campaign was successful, with 72 people backing the project, myself included, helping to raise £1786, which was more than the original target of £1500!

As the level of interest in the project grew, due to support from local media and blogs, including a couple of appearances on local radio to promote the cause, the team behind the Leamington Comic Con were left with no choice but to move the event from the original choice of venue, the LAMP, to the Royal Pump Rooms.

Their main aim is to have a Comic Con which actually focuses on comics, mostly indie and small press, and also giving local talent a platform to show off their work, an example being the Leamington Spa Comic Con poster, which was designed by Leamington Spa-based artist Michelle Abrahall. They also want to work with local comic and memorabilia traders as well as raise money for local charities by having events on the day.

The Leamington Spa Comic Con has lined up some great guests so far:

From Stalls To Walls - Help Fund Leamington Spa's First Comic Store

Fresh from news that my local town, Leamington Spa, will be hosting it's first ever comic con on Saturday October 18 at The Royal Leamington Spa Pump Rooms after a successfully funded Indiegogo campaign, the guys at Comics Etc, a locally based pop-up comic book store which has been appearing locally at film festivals, music festivals and events in the local area, are hoping to find a more permanent home and open a bricks and mortar comic book store. They want their store to offer a unique experience where customers can interact and meet like minded individuals while at the same time promoting local small press and hosting local community events such as film nights and game nights.

And over the last year that they've been popping up, the most repeated question they've had is "Have you got a store?" Well that is where you and their Indiegogo campaign can help make this happen.

They hope to raise a minimum of £5000 which will go a long way towards opening a small retail unit, with the sourcing of basic fixtures and fittings and also help add additional stock such as small press, manga and classic back issues.

And as with any crowd funding campaign, there are the perks to tempt you. These range from getting your name read out in their inaugural podcast thanking you for your contribution, to gift bundles, special T shirts, tote bags, engraved comic art and locally commissioned art.

I love my comics and I've been a regular at the MCM Memorabilia Expo and Comic Cons at the NEC in Birmingham the last few years too, plus the London Film and Comic Con as well. And now there are plans afoot to bring the fandoms and fun of a comic con closer to home.

Dan Mallier is looking to launch Leamington Spa's very first Comic Con at The Royal Leamington Spa Pump Rooms on Saturday October 18, and he's seeking the help from local heroes (writers, illustrators and fans) to unite and use their powers (love) for comics and memorabilia, with the aspiration to one day transform this project into a permanent Hulk-sized fixture.

The Indiegogo project is looking at raising £1500, with 100% of the profits going back in to fund more Leamington Comic Cons. The total raised will go towards:

• Q&A panel of writers and illustrators
