Special Features For 'Oz The Great And Powerful' Bluray Announced

I enjoyed 'Oz The Great And Powerful' when it was at cinemas, and Disney have announced the special features for the bluray, which is set for a June 11th (US) and July 1 (UK) release.

The Magic of Oz the Great and Powerful: Second Screen Experience - An immersive Second Screen experience that details all things Oz, from an interactive map full of secrets and surprises to an inside look at the spectacular world of Oz. All fans need to do is download a free Second Screen app (currently available for immediate download at the iTunes Store for iPads) which provides fans with a variety of opportunities to remain connected to their favorite film and its cast of characters, and to dive deeper into the magical world of Oz. The app also provides exclusive access to exclusive content including:

The Enchanting Characters and Creatures of Oz - From Munchkins and Tinkers to good witches, bad witches, and flying baboons, this piece follows each character and creature of the Land of Oz from inspiration to final outcome.

The Sounds of Magical Oz - What adds fragility to the sounds of China Girl's footsteps, ferocity to the tornado, or weight to the flutter of Finley's flapping wings?

Sleight of Hand: Zach Braff Puppet Theater - Finley voice actor Zach Braff introduces viewers to the Finley mock-up.

China Girl and the Suspension of Disbelief - This feature uncloaks the several forms of movie magic employed to bring China Girl to life, from the initial artwork and character design to the on-set puppeteering during filmmaking and, finally, through each stage of the visual-effects process. It also includes an interview with Joey King, the voice of China Girl.

Before Your Very Eyes: From Kansas to Oz - Production designer Robert Stromberg takes viewers through the set design of the Land of Oz, from sketching his original ideas on a napkin, through to the final set pieces and the accompanying visual effects.

Mila's Metamorphosis - Lead makeup artist Howard Berger expands on one of the oldest, most tried-and-true forms of movie magic: makeup design and effects.

Walt Disney and the Road to Oz - It's well known that Walt Disney had a fascination with the Land of Oz since he was a child. See how that fascination grew into inspiration as he began planning for his own adaptation of the stories in the classic Baum books.

Mr. Elfman's Musical Concoctions - An interview with composer Danny Elfman, who reveals his inspiration in scoring Oz The Great And Powerful.

My Journey in Oz by James Franco - A personal story produced and directed by James Franco.

Book Review: 'The Art Of OZ The Great And Powerful' Book

I enjoyed the film, and so I went and added this art book to my ever growing library.

This 256 page book reads more like a production diary for the film than the art book it says it is though. It details the behind the scenes process of the making of the film, from the initial ideas of how they were going to produce the film, and what inspired them, to the sets, video effects and costumes, with comments from the cast and crew as well. And very detailed it is too - it does kind of remind me of the 'Prometheus: The Art Of The Film' companion book, which also focused more on the production than the art - and features lots of photos from the live sets, giving you a sense of what was really there and what was added later via CGI - hint; there is a lot of photos of blue screen, but it was interesting to note that they had stand in puppets of Finley the monkey bellhop and the China Doll that they later replaced with CGI too rather than the actors acting against nothing, or the classic tennis ball on a pole.

It's in the softcover format, but that by no means diminishes the quality of this book. If you enjoy companion books to movies then you'll get a kick out of this book, more so if you enjoyed the film.

Movie Review: 'OZ: The Great And Powerful'

When Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot-fame and fortune are his for the taking-that is until he meets three witches, Theodora, Evanora and Glinda, who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity-and even a bit of wizardry-Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.
Whenever I go to see a film at the cinema, or watch a film for the first time, that was based on a book, which I might have read, or if it's one of the many sequels, prequels, reboots or reimaginings that are getting churned out of Hollywood these days, I always put any preconceptions behind me and forget about any previous incarnations and just see the film as a standalone. It was the same when I went to see 'OZ: The Great And Powerful'. Yes, most people will remember fondly the 1939 Judy Garland musical, and will compare the two films, but at least these days, I think it's best not to judge a film in this way, especially when they are very different.

I fairly enjoyed it. Sam Raimi's interpretation of Oz, was more like Army Of Darkness with a hint of Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland, both films I've enjoyed (critics be damned!). From the opening scenes in the full frame black and white, which paralleled the opening for the 1939 film, to the full colour widescreen world of Oz, full of witches, munchkins, flying monkeys and of course the Emerald City, Raimi's Oz is definitely a brightly coloured fantasy that pays homage to the original, and if you're a fan of the original film you may be able to spot a few nods towards it too. If you're a fan of Sam Raimi's films, look out for the obligatory cameo from Bruce Campbell too!

I saw it spellbinding 3D, and I would definitely recommend splashing out and seeing it in that format. There are few movies that have done the 3D this well, and it definitely gives you the sense of actually being in Oz!

There are 15 books in the Oz series written L Frank Baum, so there should be plenty of material to mine for future films.

If you're looking for a fun, entertaining fantasy film, I'd recommend going to see this.

New Japanese Poster For 'OZ: The Great And Powerful'

There is something that I love about Japanese movie posters. They are usually a bit different and more often than not nowhere near as bland or cliched as some of their North American / European poster equivilants, and the new Japanese poster for 'OZ: The Great And Powerful' is no exception. I think it's a lot better than the other OZ posters so far and maybe looks like a traditional Disney poster. Check it out.
