Brand New Sandman Arriving In 2013

Excellent!

Neil Gaiman and JH Williams III are getting together to create a brand new Sandman story next year, which just happens to be the 25th anniversary! A good excuse to dig out my Sandman graphic novels and read them all over again!

Here's Neil Gaiman with the exclusive.

Via

Update:
Check out the new artwork too.

The press release:
Twenty-five years after one of the most celebrated graphic novels of all-time hit shelves, award winning and critically acclaimed author and screenwriter, Neil Gaiman, announces his return to THE SANDMAN. Gaiman made the surprise announcement, via video, at DC Entertainment’s Vertigo panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.  Karen Berger, Executive Editor of Vertigo, then revealed that Gaiman is paired with artist, JH Williams III (BATWOMAN) for the series, who appeared on stage to an already stunned and elated crowd. THE SANDMAN mini-series will be published by Vertigo in 2013.

One of the few graphic novels ever to be on the New York Times Best Seller list and lauded by critics the world over, THE SANDMAN is credited with changing the path of storytelling in the comic book industry. Gaiman will pick up his pen for the first time in more than 10 years since ending the series to continue a story that he feels still has yet to be told.

“When I finished writing THE SANDMAN, there was one tale still untold. The story of what had happened to Morpheus to allow him to be so easily captured in THE SANDMAN #1, and why he was returned from far away, exhausted beyond imagining, and dressed for war. It was a story that we discussed telling for Sandman’s 20th anniversary… but the time got away from us. And now, with Sandman’s 25th anniversary year coming up, I’m delighted, and nervous, that that story is finally going to be told,” said Gaiman.

“There’s nothing like a Neil Gaiman story,” said Berger, “and there’s nothing like having Neil back home on THE SANDMAN, his dark, soulful, literary epic that transformed comics and continues to captivate countless new readers year after year. Working with him again, and with JH Williams, the extraordinary and groundbreaking artist, is truly the stuff dreams are made of.”

DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio added, “As accomplished as Neil Gaiman is in other media—whether it be novels, film and even music—he still has an incredible passion and love for comics. It’s exciting to have him back. J.H. Williams will be the perfect complement to Neil’s writing. He has a history of creating art that pushes the boundaries of the medium.”

Each issue of THE SANDMAN mini-series will be published day-and-date digitally. The title will be announced at a later date.

Trailer: 'OZ: The Great And Powerful'

Here's the new trailer for Disney and Sam Raimi's (never thought I'd be hearing those two names in the same sentence!) 'OZ: The Great And Powerful', out in cinemas next year.

The blurb:
When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot-fame and fortune are his for the taking-that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity-and even a bit of wizardry-Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

Book Review: Drawing Down The Moon - The Art Of Charles Vess

I first experienced the art of Charles Vess through the issues and cover art of the Vertigo/DC Comics series The Sandman and Swamp Thing during the 1990's. Along with the stories in those comic books, his artwork definitely left it's impression on me as well. An ethereal feel to the art, sort of a blend of the old fashioned Art Nouveau style with classic fantasy art. And a few years later I read through the Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess illustrated novel Stardust (after I watched the movie, which I also love), and fell in love with his artwork all over again.

Fast forward a few years later and, from Dark Horse Books, comes 'Drawing Down The Moon: The Art Of Charles Vess'. This is a superb collection of paintings, pencil sketches, pen and inks from a legend of fantasy art. Over 200 pages of luscious artwork, some with descriptions by Charles himself, and includes some of his work for Swamp Thing, Stardust as well as other works such as for George RR Martin's 'A Storm Of Swords', and 'Spiderman' and 'The Books Of Magic'.

Presented as a large format book, with most of the art taking up the full page, and with a foreword by Susanna Clarke (author of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell), this book is a joy to read and must for those that love quality art and fantasy art in particular! Totally recommended!

Cool Art: Community / Mass Effect Mash Up by Rus Silmaro

Here's a brilliant mash up on Community and Mass Effect by Rus Silmaro. I think they fit both series really well. Great work, made me laugh!

Here's what Rus had to say about it from his Deviant Art page:
Just a creative expression of two series that have inspired me Mass Effect & Community. All Mass Effect Content belongs to Bioware and all Community content belongs to NBC Universal. Intended to be a fan art tribute. Here is the genesis:

Okay, I was playing Mass Effect 3 (one of my fav game series of all time…despite the last 10 minutes of the ending) last memorial day weekend and as I was playing I noticed how Mordin Solus reminded me a lot of Abed Nadir (one of my fav TV characters of all time from one of my fav shows of all time Community…#sixseasonsandamovie) then how Shepard reminded me a lot about Jeff and so on until I was able to match almost every main character on Community to a character on Mass Effect. I ran the idea by my fiance and my nephew who are both big community fans and they thought it was awesome. I even remembered being awed by all the Community Fan Art Mash ups that I have seen on the net recently ie. Community/Street Fighter, Community/Star Wars, Community/Batman, Community/X-Men and mucho props to all the other creatives that executed those ideas awesomely. At this point the ideas in my head became a train picking up steam and I needed to express it somehow, first I was thinking about sketching, drawing or painting these characters…but with the day job and other projects that would take too long and I needed to satisfy this itch fast, so I found a hi-res screenshot of Mordin then found an image of Abed with a facial expression that matched perfectly and after some creative photoshopping and some filters applied I photoshopped an image of a mash up fan art I entitled "Abed Solus" and applying some of graphic design skills I made this little character poster.

New International Poster For Total Recall

Here's the new international poster for the new Total Recall film starring Colin Farrell.

What is it with Hollywood's obsession with movie posters and Photoshop collages though! Give me the posters from the guys from Mondo, and the old school painted posters from Drew Struzan, John Alvin, Dan Gouzeé, Renato Casaro, Richard Amsel and the rest any time! Lots more innovation from those posters than what we get as movie posters these days. Anyway . . .

Still very much interested in watching this though, want to see their take on the PKD original short story.

New Poster For Guillermo Del Toro's 'Pacific Rim' Revealed

Hot off the back of The Hobbit poster, here's another teaser poster revealed at this year's San Diego Comic Con. this time it's for Guillermo Del Toro's 'Pacific Rim'. Click to embiggen.

The blurb:
Legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, start rising from the sea and begin a war that takes millions of lives and consumes humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.

On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot (Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Kikuchi) - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

New Hardback Print of Neil Gaiman's 'Stardust'

New cover
One of my favourite authors, Neil Gaiman (The Sandman, American Gods, Coraline, The Graveyard Book and more), is releasing a new hardcover print of his 1997 novel, 'Stardust' later this year.

As with most things, I saw the 2007 movie starring Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert DeNiro first, which I loved, and just had to hunt down the original book which I also now love. And I've been after a hardcover copy of this book for a while now.

This new hardcover print edition - 'The Gift Edition' - will also feature frontispiece illustrations and chapter headings by acclaimed fantasy artist Charles Vess, the original illustrator of the book.

Check out the painted frontispiece illustrations below.

Trailer: The Prototype

Well here's something you don't see much of these days, from the trailer at least, a decent low budget intelligent sci-fi thriller. Not related to the game by the way.

This has potential to be very good and be up there with Duncan Jones' 'Moon', Gareth Edwards 'Monsters', Neill Blomkamp's 'District 9' and Jamin Winan's 'Ink' as one of my favourite low budget sci-fi / fantasy movies. A definite change from the brash CGI crapfests that Hollywood churns out these days!

Graphic Novel Review: Sinbad - Rogue Of Mars

I love the old Ray Harryhausen Sinbad films, and I like the books of John Carter, and to me, Sinbad: Rogue Of Mars is the perfect combination.

Soon to be a motion picture, says the blurb on the back, as Morningside Entertainment has bought the movie rights, and the graphic novel does come across as very cinematic, well at least part of it. I'm not really a fan of changing artists in the middle of a graphic novel / story arc, but half way through chapter four it starts off with a different artist, Kiatisak Piewkao, but then switches back to the artist of the first three chapters, Jeffrey 'Chamba' Cruz.

I liked the story, we don't see how Sinbad got to Mars - but we join him imprisoned like a gladiator and being forced to fight. But he escapes with a fellow gladiator, Kar-tyr and joins up with Qani, in a quest to overthrow the villanous Akhdar, head of the Dozhakian throne and free the enslaved Azurian people of Mars. But we never find out if they do or not. Bluewater Productions has only collected 4 out of the 5 comic books in the series. Which is a shame, as after reading this graphic novel I want to know how it ends, but we are left with a 'to be continued'. I really hope we find out how the story ends as I really like this book.

My Alternative John Carter Blu-Ray Covers

Now that I've got my hands on the John Carter blu-ray (one of my favourite films of 2012), let's just say that I'm not impressed by the original box art, just as I wasn't impressed by the official promotional posters at the time of the cinema release.

There are a few alternative covers out on the internets, and so I've had a go myself and created a few of my own covers, using some of the brilliant fan art by some incredibly talented artists as a base - some I've already posted here.
