'Journeys To Somewhere Else' - The Art Of John Avon Kickstarter Project

Celebrating 30 years of producing beautiful fantasy art for books, record covers and card games, John Avon, best known for his landscape art from 'Magic: the Gathering', is collecting his best works a into an artbook, 'Journeys to Somewhere Else'.

The book is planned as a perfect bound, large format square hardback, and will also include developmental and working sketches, thumbnail pieces and alternative versions. The book will also be available in two editions; a standard and a deluxe edition. The basic book will contain 180 pages but if they raise enough money this could be stretched all the way up to 238 pages and the Deluxe version will be stretched from 228 pages up to a whopping 276! The deluxe version will also have more images, extra sketches and a detailed chapter on how John works.

As an exclusive to this Kickstarter project, they have also been granted permission from Wizards of the Coast to use John's artwork from 'Magic: the Gathering', at least for this first volume. Meaning this could be a one-time opportunity to possess a definitive collection of John’s work from the hugely popular trading card game.

There are of course the obligatory Kickstarter add ons and special offers, with various upgrades on offer such as signed and dedicated books, plus they will be looking to add more to the campaign as it progresses, including smaller sketch bundles (single sketches), T-shirts and playmats too.

The project will only be funded if at least £24,000 is pledged by July 20 and if successful, they are looking at a February / March 2015 release.

Check out the video below and go here for more information on the project.

Cool Art: 'Arya's List' by Andy Barbieri

I've been blogging about pop culture art on here for a while now, and being inspired by 'Game Of Thrones', both the TV show and the books (although I'm only around 3/4 through the audiobook for the second book - 'A Clash Of Kings'), I've designed this poster, just for fun, featuring Arya Stark's kill list and of course, her weapon of choice, Needle.

The print is available in two versions, the kill list from the TV series, and Arya's original list from the books too.

After getting some good feedback, my very first foray into the world of pop culture poster art is now available at my Society 6 store in varying sizes and also available as a T shirt on my Redbubble store too!

'John Carter, Warlord of Mars' Returns In All-New Digital WebComic

Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., the company founded by the author to protect and maintain his original literary creations, has announced that Burroughs’ first adventure hero – John Carter of Mars – will star in an all-new weekly digital comic strip series written Roy Thomas and illustrated by Rodolfo Pérez Garcia, better known to Mexican comics fans as Pegaso.

The new series, to be called 'John Carter, Warlord of Mars', debuts on June 14, joining other classic Burroughs creations like Tarzan, Korak the Killer, Carson of Venus and Pellucidar as part of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Digital Comic Strip Service

And similarly to the other webcomics featured on the website, the first four episodes of the new 'John Carter Warlord of Mars' will be available at no charge. Fans can gain unlimited access to the entire site and all the strips from the beginning for only $1.99 per month or $21.99 per year.

The new webcomic comes soon after the reacquisition by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. of comic book and comic strip rights that had been held by Walt Disney Pictures and its Marvel Entertainment subsidiary. The company is also pleased to announce a brand new license with Dynamite Entertainment which will return the original 'John Carter Warlord of Mars' to comic books! Dynamite will also republish other John Carter assets, going back as far as the early 1940s comic strips by John Coleman Burroughs, the son of Edgar Rice Burroughs.

The character of John Carter first appeared in 1912, captivating audiences when he debuted in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ first novel, serialized as 'Under the Moons of Mars' and later published as a complete novel, 'A Princess of Mars'. As many literary and cultural scholars attest, John Carter has served as a template for the litany of adventure heroes that followed, from Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers and Superman to Stars Wars and Avatar.

Hero Complex Gallery presents the first prints in a new limited edition print series by Chris Skinner entitled 'Viewpoints'.

Each set of Viewpoints in Chris' new series will present opposing points of view, creating a unique 'viewpoint' for each one. Starting with some true classics, they kick off this series with the iconic X-Wing and TIE-Fighter spaceships.
''With these illustrations I wanted to convey a sense realism, weight and functionality that is synonymous with so many vehicles through out the Star Wars universe. Viewed as a frozen moment in time as battle commences and illustrated with an archival old world feel to reflect the 'worn' universe'' and nostalgia of the original films." - Chris Skinner.
These are 18" x 24" screenprints in a matched numbered set with metallic silver inks, and are a timed release with the edition size to be determined at the close of sale on Monday, June 9 at 11:59pm PST. They cost $60 for the set of 3 - 'X-Wing Ambush', 'TIE-Fighter Defense', and a special bonus print 'Giving Chase'.

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has announced the 16 winning pieces of the world-renowned 2014 Into the Pixel (ITP) collection.

Created in 2004, the annual ITP art exhibit honours video game artists who continue to push the interactive entertainment art form forward. Details For The First Ever Leamington Spa Comic Con

designed
Michelle Abrahall
Back in February, I highlighted the Indiegogo campaign by Dan Mallier hoping to launch Leamington Spa's very first Comic Con at The Royal Leamington Spa Pump Rooms on Saturday October 18. Well, that Indiegogo campaign was successful, with 72 people backing the project, myself included, helping to raise £1786, which was more than the original target of £1500!

As the level of interest in the project grew, due to support from local media and blogs, including a couple of appearances on local radio to promote the cause, the team behind the Leamington Comic Con were left with no choice but to move the event from the original choice of venue, the LAMP, to the Royal Pump Rooms.

Their main aim is to have a Comic Con which actually focuses on comics, mostly indie and small press, and also giving local talent a platform to show off their work, an example being the Leamington Spa Comic Con poster, which was designed by Leamington Spa-based artist Michelle Abrahall. They also want to work with local comic and memorabilia traders as well as raise money for local charities by having events on the day.

The Leamington Spa Comic Con has lined up some great guests so far:
And more to come! Also confirmed in attendance at the Comic Con is the UK Garrison, one of the foremost 'Star Wars' costuming groups in the UK and part of the 501st Legion, plus there will be comic and memorabilia traders, a photo booth and a comic cosplay competition on the day to crown Leamington's first cosplay champion!

They are giving away goodie bags to the first 100 adult guests that have bought an advance ticket or have the free entry Indiegogo perk. Advance adult tickets are £5 + booking fee, with a group ticket of four adults cost £16. Under 13's go free with a paying adult.

Go here to buy tickets.

Follow them on Facebook, on Twitter @LeamComicCon and on their blog to keep up to date with the latest happenings at Leamington's first ever Comic Con.
