Comic Book Art: 'Morning Glories'
Continuing my look at my favourite comic books and their cover art, with Morning Glories.
Written by Nick Spencer and illustrated by Joe Eisma with cover art by Rodin Esquejo, the series debuted in August 2010 via Image Comics.
The series takes place almost exclusively at the fictional Morning Glory Academy, an exclusive boarding school for teenagers. Beneath its placid facade, the school is actually involved in the murder and torture of students as well as various investigations into occult and supernatural phenomenon. The main action focuses on six students from diverse backgrounds as they enter Morning Glory Academy and try to survive.

NYCC: 'The Last Of Us' prequel from Dark Horse Comics
At New York Comic Con, Dark Horse Comics and Naughty Dog have announced they'll be doing a prequel comic series based on Playstation 3 game 'The Last of Us'.
The series will focus on protagonist Ellie and her life prior to the game's events. Artwork shown at a panel during Comic Con showed Ellie as a child with a new character, another little girl named Riley, in a crumbling city landscape.
The series will be written by both Neil Druckmann and Faith Erin Hicks with Hicks illustrating as well.
After seeing the various trailers for the game, I am looking forward to the game. If the prequel comic is as good as the other Dark Horse Comics gaming spinoffs (Mass Effect, Dragon Age) then this should be something good as well.

Comic Book Art: Fables
Continuing my look at my favourite comic books and their cover art, with Fables.
Created by Bill Willingham, 'Fables' launched on DC Comics' Vertigo imprint in 2002.
The series deals with various characters from fairy tales and folklore – referring to themselves as "Fables" – who have been forced out of their Homelands by "The Adversary" who has conquered the realm. They escaped and formed a community in New York City known as Fabletown. Fables who are unable to blend in with human society (such as monsters and anthropomorphic animals) live at "the Farm" in upstate New York.
Fables has won many Eisner Awards, including 'Best New Series' in 2003, cover artist James Jean winning 'Best Cover Artist' in 2004 to 2009 and series creator Bill Willingham 'Best Writer' in 2009.

Movie Review: ParaNorman
![]() |
| Art by Dave Perillo |
I had previously enjoyed Coraline, and when it was announced that Laika Studios were producing a new animated film I was looking forward to seeing it. Well, it's taken a while, but I've now seen it. It did not disappoint!
Right from the start, with the horror homage and the 80's style opening credits and soundtrack it kind of set the tone for me. As with all the best animated films, ParaNorman should appeal to all ages - balancing the right amount of humour and in-jokes with a fair share of chills too.
Yes it's been done many times before, the outcast having to save the day, but add in the zombies and the supernatural elements, the story worked for me. Fast paced enough and a happy ending to keep you entertained throughout the two hours.
I'd been following the behind the scenes videos at Weirdwins, and all the effort that went into producing the film, as well as owning the 'Art & Making Of ParaNorman' art book too (which I thoroughly recommend). After watching the finished article, it was all worthwhile. I thought the animation was spot on, and visually impressive. I also liked the soundtrack by Jon Brion and art style of the end credits.
If you enjoyed films like 'The Nightmare Before Christmas', 'Corpse Bride' and 'Coraline', then you will get a kick out of watching 'ParaNorman'. A great looking film that both scares and makes you laugh and pays homage to the old schlocky horror films it's parodying. Recommended.

His quest ends only after he has spilled the blood of a thousand!
I would recommend picking up the trades for this ongoing series. The artwork is very cinematic in style, almost as if they were storyboards for a movie! It's the only comic that I've had a letter published in too, I was quite happy about that at the time!!!

Movie Review: Looper
![]() |
| Art by Glen Matthews (Midnight Marauder) |
A very solid and enjoyable film. A smart sci-fi movie that I'd put up there with the likes of Inception and Moon and that's something I welcome!
Set in the near future of 2044, where a small percentage of people have 'TK', a form of telekinesis that's no powerful than floating coins in the palm of your hand, and where 'Loopers', a sort of hired gun, kill those who are sent back in time by the mob thirty years in the future (where time travel has been invented and instantly outlawed), until the loop is closed and they themselves get sent back in time and they essentially kill their future selves.
Written and directed by Rian Johnson, this is well crafted. Mature and grounded yet futuristic and sci-fi. It felt a bit like Terminator crossed with a flavour of perhaps Children Of The Corn/Omen but it completely works. Some of the cinematography on the set pieces work really well, with hints of Inception (especially Levitt's iconic scene funnily enough). The time travel element is used to good effect, but doesn't over complicate things either. The cast play their parts really well too. Joseph Gordon-Levitt definitely IS Bruce Willis. He certainly has his mannerisms down to a tee.
All in all, I wish there were more genre films like this as it's very refreshing as opposed to some of the guff that usually gets released. Rian Johnson is on par with the likes of Christopher Nolan and Duncan Jones in my book, and a director I will look out for now. I will be tracking down his earlier movie 'Brick' as a result.
Totally recommended!

Sneak Peek Featurette For 'Arrow'
A sneak peek featurette for new super hero TV series 'Arrow'. The closest we'll probably get to a live-action Batman series as it feels very similar.
The series debuts on CW in the US on October 10, and will appear in the UK on Sky 1 HD later.

My Ibiza 2012 Videos
Not necessarily geeky or nerfherdery, but under my Residentclubber.co.uk guise, here's a couple of videos I've put together from this year's holiday to Ibiza.
Featuring a few clips, mostly from Itaca Bar, the awesome sunset (you really have to be there to experience the chilled out vibe!) and a live vocal from vocalist Katherine Amy over Toca's Miracle. Had too much fun to take more video but for photos from our August holiday to Ibiza, click here.
Check out the videos below.

Short Film: 'Plurality' by Dennis Liu
"After two years and very little money", Dennis Liu and his friends have released a short sci-fi film, 'Plurality'. Kind of reminds me a bit like the film 'Enemy Of The State' and the upcoming game 'Watchdogs'.
Check it out!

Comic Book Art: John Constantine: Hellblazer (1-100)
Continuing my look at my favourite comic books and their cover art, with the long running DC Comics' / Vertigo series John Constantine: Hellblazer.
John Constantine was created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, John Totleben and Rick Veitch and first appeared in 1985 as a recurring character in the horror series The Saga of the Swamp Thing (#37 June 1985), in which he acted as a "supernatural advisor" to the main character.
In 1988, Constantine was given his own title, Hellblazer, published by DC Comics and written by Jamie Delano and illustrated by John Ridgway. In 1993, at the launch of DC's Vertigo Comics imprint, Hellblazer was made an official Vertigo publication. It is still the longest continuously published Vertigo title.
